I didn’t eat as well as I would have liked, but I did better than I had the past few weeks. I was also able to do more exercise without a lot of knee pain this week. I did all of the bike rides scheduled and even though they were on the trainer, I felt good about getting back in the swing of things. I was also able to mow the grass on Saturday, which is about 2 mile of walking. That may not sound like much, but that is the most I’ve been able to be up on my feet since my knee surgery 2 weeks ago. It was also good for my mental state. While my wife is certainly capable of mowing the grass, that has always been one of my jobs around the house and it made me feel a little helpless and useless to watch her doing “my” job. The other good news was that I weighed this morning and after gaining back up to 285 after my surgery, I was down to 283 this morning.
Scott

GREAT JOB, Scott! Man, walking two miles two weeks after knee surgery sounds pretty darn MAJOR to me! Good job getting back into the swing so quickly, what dedication! And some more congrats on the pounds lost! Wahoo!

I found out when I looked at my log this morning that, if you put nutrition in the "planned" log, it is automatically dropped into your "actual" log, unlike training. I'm going to try to do my logs for M-Th a day ahead, based on what I have in the house. The thought of not having to change my planned log is a great motivator.

Oooo that's very cool, maybe I'll do the same. I already plan my whole day out first thing in the morning, maybe planning even further ahead would be cool.

oh, planning what to eat...hmmm....maybe I should try that sometime - LOL!!! Seriously, I have NOT been planning in months, just sort of trying to make good choices from what we have around. But I was thinking yesterday that having a plan is a lot easier to stay on track. So this week that is my small goal, make an eating plan for the week.

Just back from a really great run feeling all motivated from you guys today. Now to get to my other work (home, apply for some jobs, etc)

I had a good weekend food wise and training wise. Even though the food part was not by choice. I was fully prepared to blow it out on Saturday with beer and pizza, but the hosts of the get together I was at did subs and beer and subs don't mix so subs it was.

I've got card group at my house on Tuesday and we have to have dessert, wine, cheese, etc. So I'll be tempering that with strawberries and grapes. It's hard to stick to the diet when you are doing the entertaining. None of the women want diet food (and they've said that, pretty much). Dessert will be apple pie ala mode. STRENGTH!!!

Yow Suzanne! I'll be sending positive vibes your way -- it's extra hard when you have to serve stuff you don't really want to eat yourself! That's hard!

STRENGTH is right!

the problem is when you serve food you WANT but shouldn't eat... haha

i just got back from swimming.. gosh i suck... in a lot of ways... first no one told me, that there would be only one lane open for public use... one lane in a 25 meter pool.. but oh well... i can deal with that... but then... i didn't bring my goggles and that stupid cap (what do you call it??) to spain... when i went to the pool i didn't even think about such things... i had my new bathing suit and was happy..

so i had to borrow an old cap and swam without goggles... my eyes didn't hurt, so i didn't realize how much chlorine there was in the pool... i actually didn't realize it till a man started screaming at me in the street after asking me for a lighter... i looked at him and when he saw my eyes he was out of it lol those are the moments when you wish you had a camera right there and then!! he told me i have "ojos muchisimos rojos" - extremely red eyes...

then the swimming itself... i did 500 meters and it took me almost 15 minutes... ugh... i didn't know HOW bad i am in shape... well i had to swim really slow from time to time cuz there were even slower ppl in the pool and i didn't try to go all fast... but oh well... training starts october 10 so i should train a few more times till then since my mom had signed me up for the intermediate instead of the beginner group... (beginner group doesn't work for me either cuz it interferes with my weightwatchers grou lol)

wow what kind of loney person am i to need all those groups? weightwatchers group, swimming group, online loser support group... lol just kidding...

but hey... i'm new.. i have no clue.. what's a good time for the 800 meter swim in a sprint tri?

Kathie - a solid middle of the pack swim time is generally 1:30 to 2:00 per 100 minutes. I'm not there yet, either.

1:30 per 110 yards is frickin AWESOME! It's taken me MONTHS of effort to break the 2:00 min/100 yard barrier. You rock!

well i used to be a real good swimmer... 36 sec for 50 meters.. but i was always just swimming short distances.. and only breaststroke... now i'm trying to work on crawl cuz i think it's more efficient for long distances.. but that stuff is hard!! gosh i did 75 meters and felt like i do after my run.. so i did like half/half in the end... but my swimming classes (starting oct 10) are for crawl.. so i'll get the chance to work on my style... hopefully... i really hope they won't kick me out lol and today was just a 25 meter pool and the swim club i joined has a 50m pool so it'll be even harder.. but yeah... my new bathing suit is great lol lol lol

Hiya,

I hope you don't mind that I tagged along.

I too was like another lady who posted. I finished my first tri in Shreveport (Rivercities) saw the photos of myself from the professionals. And nearly DIED with the site. I knew I was never a slimmy - but good gracious - those pictures made hunka-hunka look like a twig.

Okay maybe I am exaggerating a bit, but I still lost my breath when I saw my pictures.

I am supposed to be about 10 pounds less in weight for a healthy weight. I can't seem to get there.

The only thing I found right now, are appetizer diet cookies , high in protein and fiber, and GREAT for the munchies. You'd figure working a desk job I shouldn't get so hungry throughout the day.

Thanks for starting this.

Kathie,

I read your post after just getting back from my first workout on the couch to sprint program. To put your swim in perspective, I am envoius of both your time and distance. I managed to travel 400 yards in the water, but it wasn't pretty, or consecutive, or the same stroke. Be proud of what you accomplished.

I had my first official weigh-in, at 243, which was only 3 pounds off the bathroom scale. 220 by New Years Day, here I come.

This web site, and these support forums, are a blessing for me. Thank you all.

John

Hey...you are in the pool and working at it and I know you'll get faster..you have a swimming background. My first longer race I swam something like 4:12/100....last Oly I did 1:52/100 and I was super proud of my progress.

Swimming is so much technique plus pacing well and  the all important breathing. It took me almost a year at working at swimming I finally got it so I now can swim as long as I want to...still BOP but more comfortable, having fun, and working at getting faster.

I didn't do the math - but for my first tri - 22 minutes to finish 500-meters - which included conquering a lot of fears and the urge to quit.

Rivercities - 35 minutes for 800-meters and still conquering many of the same fears but a lot less desire to quit.

I'll let you know how the next one goes.

Hey, I am the queen of swimming the breaststroke. In fact, I was successfully able to complete my first tri doing nothing but the breat stroke, and my time was extremely acceptable... but nothing to write home about.

In fact, I had an "equipment malfunction" during the race, and was LITERALLY doing the breast stroke... that's when I learned that jog bras keep the girls held up, but do nothing to inhibit their natural buoyancy

However, this was definitely not overnight... the first couple of weeks in the pool were rough as my muscles remembered what they could do twenty years earlier.

Freestyle still kills me... I am getting better, and hope to be able as comfortable with freestyle as I am with the breast stroke by the time next season rolls around... but it is going to be tough work, as well as taking me well out of my comfort zone... it's kind of meditative to just do the breast stroke, and really hard work to practice the freestyle... which one do you think wins???

For my 1st tri, I did a lot of swimming to go from barely being able to swim 1 length of the pool to being able to swim the entire 600m that I would have to swim in my race nonstop. i was really proud of myself and felt good going into the race. I made it all of 100m before i was reduced to the sidestroke/freestyle/backstroke/ and even the doggy paddle. I had almost 3 waves of swimmers pass me before the finish. When I finally touched solid ground again, I sighed a prayer of relief and started to T1 only to see my wife heading the same direction. The problem was she started over 9 minutes behind me and was very disappointed with her swim. The good news is that after about a year everything started to click.

Just hang in there and the swimming will come around. I know it's frustrating, but it takes a lot of swimming to refine your technique. I have put off getting back into the pool because I know that after about a 9 month layoff, I'm going to be really slow. I really feel your pain.

I'm with ya on this.  I keep hearing from friends, family, and co-workers about how much better I'm looking and how much weight I've lost blah blah....then I see the pictures from a race and say "Oh my $%#"

I have to remember to tell myself that those pics still look wayyyy better then they would have 76lbs ago.
