58F / 14C
Overcast
Total Time = 2h 00m 7s
Overall Rank = 172/469
Age Group = M50-54
Age Group Rank = 8/13
Pre-race routine:

Woke up at 1:30 AM for the usual bagel, peanut butter, banana and water. Coffee and gatorade at 4:30 AM. Drove in from the hotel in Delevan...parking was better than expected
Event warmup:

Walked for 1/2 mile...light stretching. Waited and waited.
Swim
  • 18m 15s
  • 820 yards
  • 02m 14s / 100 yards
Comments:

It was a tough swim due to the chop...i had never swam in water that rough before.
What would you do differently?:

Avoid swallowing large volumes of H2O.
Transition 1
  • 04m
Comments:

Approximate time...due to my dumb a** self leaving the timing chip at my transition area.

The only good news...my wetsuit did NOT stick on my heels. I sat down to remove it.
What would you do differently?:

Use my head for more than a helmet rack.
Bike
  • 1h 07m 49s
  • 19 miles
  • 16.81 mile/hr
Comments:

Struggled on the bike...could not keep up with groups that passed me.

BTW...there was a lot of flagrant drafting going on. One group of five...another group of 3.
What would you do differently?:

More bike mileage.
Transition 2
  • 03m 10s
Comments:

Could not find my bike for quite a while...very frustrating! The transition area was very disorganized.
What would you do differently?:

Tie a balloon on my bike rack.
Run
  • 26m 56s
  • 3.1 miles
  • 08m 41s  min/mile
Comments:

Poor effort except for my kick. I had to do some walking on the way up the hill.
What would you do differently?:

Train more hills.
Post race
Warm down:

Oranges...bananas...water. While stretching I noticed a sharp pain in my left foot. I hope it's nothing major.

Event comments:

45 Minutes late starting. 50 minute line for packet-pick-up on Friday night. Bad Transition area. Horrible "bike-in/bike-out" area. Toooo may races going on at one time...they need to get rid of the super-sprint and relays.

Performance: Average
Suit: Quintana Roo sleeveless
Course: Very choppy/windy. Many swimmers freaked out and swam directly to the kayaks and buoys. I swallowed a lot of water for the first 50 meters, but persevered. A very tough swim on the way out, but it was nice coming back for the finish...could have used a boogie board.

I did Lake Geneva too and I agree with about everything you said. They should cut the super-sprint at least. The chop was tough swimming and the course was very hilly. I live in Illinois and I'm not sure where to even train for that hilly of a course.

Also, wasn't the bike longer than 17 miles? My CatEye said something like 19.9 miles and I heard from somebody else that they changed it at the last minute because of construction.

You are correct.

I received confirmation from the Lake Geneva Race Director that the bike portion was 2 miles longer...due to construction.

Thre race at LG is a tough course on years when the weather is cooperating, can't imagine dealing with brutal chop knowing that the hilly run is only a bike ride away. Great job on perservering.

Nice race. The swim was brutal for me as well.
