Subject: Hey Rog........

You ever been to the Talladega 500?  My twins and a couple of their girlfriends hit us up with a powerpoint presentation last night on all the reasons we should let them head down there for the race, and camp for the weekend on the race grounds.  After a parent conference phone call with the others girl's folks we decided to let them have at it.  Other than the typical redneck craziness, which they can deal with, any thoughts or info would be great (if you have any).

Yes, I've been there for a couple of races with my 2 kids. Many people make it a 3-day event and get there on Friday night.....party all day Saturday then go to the big race on Sunday. I think on Saturday there is still activity on the track too but we've only ever just gone on race day. There are tons of RVs, motorhomes, 5th-wheels, trailer trailers and tents. Food vendors are everywhere. People everywhere. Given the good ole boy redneck crowd NASCAR tends to draw, I'd say things are relatively safe. It is also well policed by state and local police.

There are lots of vendors steeling tee shirts and NASCAR memorabilia and they even have a race car you can drive (not on main track) for $$.

One recommendation I will make is do NOT sit down low. The first time we went we got seats in the first row and I was so happy we'd gotten front row seats! Till we got there....and you can't see chit! Only the track right in front of you. Could not even see the monitors. Also, the sound was deafening! Hard to describe. Most people wore ear plugs down low....and if you didn't bring some you could buy them for extortion prices. But I gotta admit, it was a huge rush when the pack would pass by bumper to bumper doing almost 200 mph and the roar was deafening and you could feel the sound waves rush thru you.

There are many different seats and like most things in life, you get what you pay for. The bleacher seats will have you sitting cheek-by-jowl with your neighbor. Better to get the fold down seats so you have your space. I don't have to tell you the 'best seats'....the pricing will tell you that.

I've never done the in field but it seems most that do the in field do so in a motorhome so they can sit on top of the motorhome to watch the races.

Check out the Talladega race website: https://www.talladegasuperspeedway.com/

I just browsed a recent even and saw "Wild Game Cookoff" that your kids might enjoy or participate in. Each race will have a webpage listing activities during the weekend.

The Wild Game Cook-off sounds like a hoot:

I've been a couple of times (I went to grad school in B'ham and had a cousin that lived in Talladega). Honestly, Talladega is a pretty rural area with a big race track. Seems to me not many things your kids could get into trouble doing. There is a nice lake close by, maybe they'd like to go noodling?

Nothing to add but get them radio headsets. Lots of my co-workers in Houston that do the nascar and Indy races have them. Protect their hearing and they can actually listen to the crews talk strategy.

Thanks fellas!

I got them 2-day seats in the tri-oval grandstand section, row 41.....and a 3 day camping pass.

Should be a hoot for them.....kinda wish I was going along.....but I've been nixed by "team girl rednecks".

LB is sending his daughters down there with a pack of other girls. I don’t know all that goes on with you hill billies at nascar races. But I’m pretty sure “noodling” is exactly what he’s trying to avoid !

Seriously, if I’m the only one who knows what noodling is then I am at severe risk of losing my coastal elite club card.

Well.....there is THAT!! And Oyster.....you prefer placed boxes or root wads? I'm gonna tell you this straight up.....sticking your arm up in a river bank rootwad is a hell of a lot scarier than what Googles is proposing......I'll do the set boxes all day....but rootwads was a one weekend deal for me....and I only did it out of being more scared of ridicule from the coon arse bastards I was with. Hahaha

No so much knowing but doing. If you have caught a fish using your arm as bait basically (?) then turn your card in !

It ain't those flatheads that are scary......they don't bite bad....but a chance of one of those black snakes with the white mouths make the whole thing a damn nightmare.....I CAN tell you how drunk you need to be to do it though...and it's prolly drunker than you'll ever be in your life. LOL

I always thought the scariest thing was the farmer coming after you with a pitch fork when he caught you and his daughter noodling in the barn.

That's a pretty impressive presentation. And a ballsy finish if you're not a Big Red chewer.

Yeah.....all 4 of them had that deer in the headlights look when that frame came up.....my guess is they fretted over it quite a bit....then just figured they might as well go for broke.

That’s funny stuff. After big red I liked the food slide. All I could think of was “dear baby Jesus”. Of course, don’t you put that evil on me is always great. So how’d they take it when you said no?

After a few phone calls to some career counterparts in that neck of the woods I said yes. It'll be their first big trip alone but I'll have some eyes down there with a campsite number to keep an eye on. Trust, but verify, right? What can you do? I didn't raise them to be afraid of the world.

Awesome! Redneck women in cowboy boots and shorts! Gotta love that. That don't look like Dr Pepper in those cozies Dad.....

Always a relief when kids make it home safely. My son, in his second year of law school, it taking a semester of law at Tel Aviv, Israel. Been worried about him ever since he left. I asked him to provide some proof of life every day. We usually text every day or he will post on FB or I will see a charge on his CC on-line. So classes are over now and his last final is later this week. Got a text from him yesterday saying he was in Palestine. Good Lord! Be careful son. Asked him this morning if he had seen or done anything cool there yesterday and he said "I snuck into a mosque and went to a refugee camp". Oiy! I will breath a sigh of relief when he is back in the US. He has 2 weeks after his last final and before his flight home so he is going to Romania and Cyprus, since it is "so close" as he said and the flight was less than $100. I told him to make sure he registers the planned trips with the State Department.....I'm sure he will 'forget'. The most challenging dilemma in parenting is wanting to keep your kids under your wing forever and allowing them to create and live their own lives.

Yeah.....that IS the challenge.  My wife and I went out of our way to raise our daughters to be strong and unafraid of life....and to not feel like they needed to take a back seat to anyone.  Well, that's EXACTLY what we got. LOL  They've traveled thousands of miles since they started driving, and the first few months were easily the most nerve racking thing I'd ever done.  Over time they inspired more confidence.....and this was a big trip for them to make on their own.

I know that's not Dr. Pepper.......but you can't prove it.
