Subject: Just Tri'ing It Out
Well I've always been swimmer and I thought I would give this triathlon thing a shot since I've always had the notion to complete an IronMan. I think that would be a great chapter to add to my life. I think a short term goal is doing the Escape From Alcatraz tri next year. That sounds like a pretty fun event. I think what encouraged me the most to finally make the move to "triathlonning" is competing at the FINA World Masters Championships Swimming at Stanford Univ. in CA. It was really neat swimming amongst world record holders, former olympians, and people from all over the world. I was also very intrigued by the open water swimming they had going. I didn't compete in the open water, but I'm very intrigued to do so, and I figure if I'm going to open water swim, why not go ahead and make a tri out of it.

For now, I just want to see if I can get my joints to hold up with the running since I've been in a low impact sport for the most part of my life. I'm quite encouraged at this point since I went to RunOn which specializes in selling running shoes. They gave me the hook up and explain a lot on what sort of shoe I needed which makes a huge difference for me since I pronate pretty badly when I walk/run. So I'm going to strap those shoes on tomorrow and see how they do. The last pair I was using has made my legs pretty soar.

I'm going to do my first triathlon on 9/24 with LAC, the team I swim/part-time coach for. The event consists of a 400yd swim, 13 mile bike, and 3 mile run. Sounds like a short amount of time to get ready for, but I've been in pretty decent shape and I started running a few weeks ago. I started biking last weekend on a borrowed mountain bike and just now bought a road bike. I'm no bike expert, but from the expertise and help of my friends, I ended up with a co-workers used bike. It's a Windsor Falkirk which I know isn't exactly the best thing but it is loaded with Ultegra parts and does have carbon fiber forks so I'm happy. Especially since it came with a computer, and helmet and miscellaneous things such as spare tubes and what not. It was barely ridden by the guy because he just couldn't get into it. It had about 135 miles on it and I was able to steal it for $600 so I'm feeling pretty good about that.

Well I guess that's just about it, at least for now.

Welcome...this is an awesome place to be when you decide to put time in to tri-ing. You've certainly got a great base to start from, and goals are always good!

Thanks for the welcoming biker_chic.

I tried out the new shoes today and even though I didn't really run that far, the shoes were absolutely great. It's unbeleivable how much difference the right shoe can make. My whole body feels much better after that run. Somehow, I think my legs feel better after todays workout than they did before hand. My shin isn't soar and my knees actually don't hurt. It's like the shoes fixed me or something. It sounds strange, but I swear I actually feel better.

My goal today was to make sure I can do the bike to run transition. After doing a little over the equivalent bike milage in the tri I'm doing next weekend, my transition went even better than I thought. I tried this last weekend and I thought I was going to fall from the rubber leg syndrome. It wasn't near as bad this time around. I also practiced the bike dismount. It was extremely helpful to see the video on the Improving Your T2: The Dismount article. If you happen to be doing your first tri, I highly recommend checking this out.

Welcome.  What a great swim base you have that most of us can only dream of...it should translate well for you.  And with a good pair of running shoes, you have a great start.

Good luck in 2 weeks!  Just keep it easy on the run and bike since you seem to be fairly new to this training...walk some of the run if needed...like the run 8min, walk 2min method.

I would have loved to have been fit enough to do a sprint triathlon after only a few weeks! That's brilliant! And thanks for the heads-up on that article, I have only done 1 tri, and my T2 was comedy!

You'll love this site, but beware, it's addictive.....

Well how cool is that. The very person that wrote the article I was bragging about, Improving Your T2: The Dismount, posts even more good advice and words of encouragement for me. Thanks Ron.

Thanks for your comments too Jacqui. You're right, this site is obviosly addictive.
