Nice!

My cucumbers are basically done.  I picked enough for 4 gallons of pickles and a few salads.  Now the tomatoes are out of control.  I just came in from picking 26 and I'll have that many again by Friday I would guess.  My jalapenos are on their 4th sprouting.....but my zucchini suck!  I guess I have a pollen problem because I'm getting plenty of flowers but the "male" parts are not growing to fruit. I've had a grand total of ONE zucchini.

In about 3 weeks I'll put next years strawberries in and a fall crop of radishes.

I'm working hard to keep 5 blackberry sprigs alive but we cut them on July 4th and it's been hot as hell......they are barely hanging on.  I may have to replant later in the Fall but I am no longer looking to next year to have berries.

i don't think the males fruit, they just die off.  I often have a sprout of males, and then the females slowly develop as the males die.  you can also pollinate yourself with a cue tip if you are really concerned.

I don't understand zucchini plants......I'm thinking about pollinating them with a forking rake.

I tried this......I felt like an idiot doing it, but I did it for the sake of zucchini bread, which I love.  It didn't work.

Yesterday afternoon I tried a different method.  First, I stomped the chit out of both plants.  Then, I took the end of a shovel and chopped the stompings into pieces.  Next, I threw the pieces out into the yard and ran over them with a lawn mower.  Finally, I took the mulch from the mower bag and threw it in the creek.

I don't know if my method will work any better than yours, but I feel better.

Yeah, big tomatoes are about done here.  I'm headed up to Nebraska this weekend and when I get back I'll pick whatever is red or close, and all of the green ones to pickle......it's been a good year.  Plenty of water and heat.  I probably got 125 tomatoes out of 6 plants.  The cherry tomatoes will go another round yet.  I hope to get another 50-100 red off of them.  I counted my jalapenos tonight.....74 on 4 plants....this will be the 4th picking when I get to it next week.

I've got strawberry plants coming next week, and I'll put in 8-10 rows of radishes while I'm at it.

The best news is that I was able to grow 4 out of 6 blackberry sprigs even though I put them in the ground in mid July.....I bet I've got 200 gallons of water on them to keep them alive. LOL

I want to try horseradish in the spring, to harvest in the fall so I've been reading up on that.  we eat a lot of seafood and I like to make my own cocktail sauce with fresh horseradish....I want my own!

On another note, a guy who works for me brought in about 100 peaches from his trees today, I took a couple dozen.......delicious!!

Man, it's time to make room in the freezer.....got deer and turkey from last year to make jerky out of.  It's almost harvest season....fresh meat coming!

This is such a tough life.

And a country boy can survive....

I think the fundamental difference in big city folks and rural folks is dependency on gubment. Most people who live in NYC don't own cars and rely on the gubment for most transportation. The rely on gubment for rent control and a higher minimum wage. Most have never been hunting and have never even fired a gun. Most do not go fishing and have never raised a garden or canned anything in their life. When the power goes out in NYC the city shuts down. When the power goes out in Alabama we cook out on our grills and if it stay out long enough, we'll fire up the old generator to run the deep freezer. Anyway, it's just a different way of life. I love visiting big cities but would never live in one! I love to visit because I am fascinated in how they live....itty-bitty apartments, no lawns to mow, riding the subway to work....walking from your apt to a local pub or restaurant.....

Yep.......two weekends ago we ran lines on the Mississippi from Friday night until Sunday morning....camping on a sand bar within 12 miles of downtown St. Louis.  We caught and cleaned over 400 lbs. of flathead, blue, and channel cats.  I bet we didn't see 10 other boats fishing the river.

You don't have to live in the country to be able to fend for yourself.....but you have to have it in your heart.

We set the lines the last 2 hours of the day and then run them the first thing in the morning. We clean the fish when we come back to camp. Not much beer drinking during the day because we have to go back out at 530 PM or so.....its mostly spent catching bait in the backwaters. That river is no joke.....the current around the wing dikes where we set lines is massive....so you really can't get drunk and go out there. Now, once the lines are set and we're back to camp frying fish and sitting around the fire.....yeah, it's pretty stupid.

Sounds like a hoot....hows come I didn't get an invite?

I've been toying with the idea of putting my tritoon in the TN here is Huntsville and cruising down to the Mississippi and back. Sleep on the boat, fish and live off the land. Just need to figure out gas stops. Might wait till after I retire....maybe next year. I could retire now but after about 6 months of fishing, traveling and doing some projects around the house I'd need to figure out some purpose in life....maybe a part time job.

After half a dozen marathons, a couple of ironmans and countless thousand of miles running, IDK if my knees would take kindly to that.

Besides, BTDT....and have the tee-shirt. Would really just like to try something different....make hike or bike the Natchez Trace....spend a week trekking on the AT....build a few houses for Habitat for Humanity....raise some chickens....

Oh and BTW, I did triathlons and marathons while I was working so that still leaves 40 hrs a week to do something else.

I also thought about seasonal work. Years ago we went to Yellowstone. We rode the stage coach and the drive was in cowboy drag. I got to talking to him and found out he is a school teacher and works during the summer months driving the stage coach for the tourists. That would be fun. Maybe get my divemaster cert and teach SCUBA diving....or work at ski resort and do some skiing in my off hours. Many I'll build a greenhouse and grow produce year round.

We did a similar ride when we did Yellowstone/Tetons a few years back. They hauled us down the field in an open wagon and delivered us to a 'camp' up on a hill with an awesome view. The fed us a pretty decent steak dinner and hauled us back to our cars. Our 'cowboy wagon driver was a pretty nice guy and this was just one of many odd job titles he held.

You should really look into volunteer work in the National Park system, BLM, National Forest and USGS to name a few.

https://www.volunteer.gov.- pick a state and the positions are listed for you.

Some include housing, meals and other perks. We plan to do this when I retire. Or at least try it for a few years. We became aware of these opportunities while chatting with one of the shuttle drivers in Zion NP. I've met crews restoring or improving the trails on nearly every NP hike I've taken. These are usually Civilian Conservation Corps and pretty young as the work is fairly strenuous; it might be something you'd like to try. We also get newsletters from several 'conservation' groups that we donate to every year and they are always looking for volunteers to work on various projects.

I will give Black Lives Matter a call....

Given what I make now and what I'd make driving a stage coach, you could call it volunteering. But wouldn't be doing stage coach driving for the money just sounds like it'd be fun. Whatever money I made would pay for beer and gas money.

Working on trails would be fun. I love outdoor work.

I volunteer a couple of years ago at the downtown rescue mission....I wasn't very good at the first assignment they gave me, serving dinner to 200 homeless people who lived at the shelter. All I could think is, why did I drive all the way down here to serve food on a food line when there are 200 able-bodied people at the shelter that can be servers?! So the next assignment I got was much better. They held a fund-raiser at skeet-shooting range. That was pretty cool. The funny thing is, I got my company to sponsor 5 four-man teams and I wanted to be on the team. So they assigned me to 'set-up and tear-down' as they had tents and tables and served lunch (donated from Outback). Have done this 2 years running and they agreed to sponsor more teams this year. Since I got my company to sponsor so many teams, it helps to assuage the guilt for not volunteering to work the event.
