Pre-race routine:

For starters, the race organization completely butchered the timing (awards were quite confusing as a result), so I'm using my Garmin splits here because in a rare occurrence I actually lapped at exactly the right time for each leg.

Had breakfast at my apartment and drove down to the race site the morning of. Overheard that the water was so warm it was going to be wetsuit illegal - first time ever for me!
Event warmup:

Easy bike and run. Spent a good amount of time wading in deep water because they messed up the start for us by timing it with the sprint finish.
Swim
  • 29m 11s
  • 1500 meters
  • 01m 57s / 100 meters
Comments:

Not sure about my ranks as about half the field didn't have a swim time listed.

Despite how slow this was (long course according to my watch), I think I did a good job here. Drafted well and stayed pretty straight. Wetsuits definitely make a big difference!

Transition 1

Comments:

Long run from the lake up to transition. No wetsuit so this was pretty simple.

Comments:

Tough to get into a rhythm on this course. Was able to hit 198 watts (206 normalized), which was a little under my goal but I was fine with it. Really hard to tell where I was in the race because of all the turn arounds plus sprinters still on the course. Definitely got passed by someone in my race who thought I might've been in the lead, but I figured I was a few guys back most likely.

Comments:

This is where the messed up timing really made my upset. I very intentionally ran a sub-40 10K, and they have me down for almost 41 minutes.

Anyway, the run was just as confusing to tell where I was in the race because we were sharing the trail with people doing the HIM. People at the turn around didn't seem to know either. All I knew was the guy that passed me on the bike was way ahead, so I figured I didn't have much to gain by killing myself out there. With the real goal being next weekend, I decided it best to pull back just slightly, but still hold a pace to go sub-40. It was harder than I expected, but I was able to do it with very even splits.

Post race
Warm down:

Walked around and chatted with the guy who passed me on the bike. Turned out he was right, he won and I finished second. Who knew?

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Held back a little because this is not my A race

Event comments:

I really like supporting HITS, but this was not a well run race. Such a shame because they used to do a much better job. How they didn't see the logistical nightmare of the swim start coming makes no sense to me, totally avoidable. And I hope they saved a lot of money on whatever timing service they used, because it was truly poor quality. Finding out after the fact why the bike course was just the sprint twice made sense, so have to forgive them for that.

Not sure I'll return to this one, sad to say. Heard a rumor there may be a venue change for next year, I guess we'll see.
