Total Time = 2h 52m 5s
Overall Rank = 214/278
Age Group = Clydsdale 50-54
Age Group Rank = 10/18
Pre-race routine:

Woke up at 4am ate oatmeal, banana, put bike and bag in the truck and drove 45 minutes to race Dropped off running bag and headed to lake. Filled bike tires, set up transition, got marked and then went to warm up.
Event warmup:

warmed up in lake prior to late take off for swim.
  • 20m 5s
  • 750 meters
  • 02m 41s / 100 meters

Fun start, was late but still managed to get into the pack. No timing strip on water entry so it was combined with T1.
What would you do differently?:

Make sure watch works prior to starting the warm up. Get warmed up earlier.
Transition 1
  • 09m 55s

A little confusing, feet tender getting in and out of the lake. Not cold at all, jogged to bike location.
What would you do differently?:

Put on race number but didn't have to do that. Just leave at run start next time. Need to practice getting bike shoes on quicker, and socks if I'm going to use them. Think about biking without and putting them on at the run.
  • 1h 26m 58s
  • 12.4 miles
  • 8.56 mile/hr

Hills were underestimated in my training. The bike trail was good but unknown to me. I lost the most time here to what I was expecting of me.
What would you do differently?:

Need to preride the course, especially the last hill. Didn't know how much more the hills take out of me.
Transition 2
  • 04m 56s

Didn't do anything tricky to cut this time down. Could prepare better for the transition.
What would you do differently?:

Might try rpulling feet out before, and working socks on with the running shoes rather than in T1
  • 50m 11s
  • 3.16 miles
  • 15m 53s  min/mile

After the ride my legs were tired. I started the run fine but within a 1/2 mile felt my right calf start to hurt again. Ran/walked 3:1 pace for rest of race.
What would you do differently?:

Need ot not get hurt the week before, concentrate on stretching and pay more attention to the easy in easy workouts.
Post race
Warm down:

Got a drink of water, ate a little, got my time, bags, and bike and transported back to truck.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

I'm still too heavy, it really hurt me on the climbs of the bike and the running impact. Probably slows me down in the swim as well. Losing weight is a priority.

Event comments:

This was a great race, probably too much for my first one but I'm glad I did it and enjoyed every minute of it. People were amazing both the volunteers and the competitors. Very positive, and inspiring! The bike climb is no joke, its hard and should be preridden to get the feel for it. Not much drop at all but thats what is really difficult about this race, the swim and run are uneventful. I will do this again next year and for awhile as its a great way to finish the season.
