Well, a week back into my routine and the soreness and stiffness especially in my hips continues; that hip injection I had in Jan helped for a while but now the same issues have resumed. Good 3 miles this am, will see how the rest of the day goes....

Bill I’m sorry to hear that it’s still causing you issues. If the injections you got are what I’m thinking about others I know have gotten, then four months with at least some relief is pretty dang good. I’m sure though that you’ll do things with pain that most I know of would not even consider so that’s probably got a bunch to do with it.

So yesterday I took part in the Special Olympics Torch run and had a blast. Did 3 of the 4 legs which was right at 7 miles. Wanted to do the last leg but had to get back and get the dinner for everyone set up. About to head out to cook breakfast and do two more legs for around 4 miles, then off to San Antonio for the Summer Games!! This year I not only get to help the athletes but also get to participate with them in a 4 x 100 relay

Hi Turtles!
I am back from my hike and overuse injuries. Just started working out again today. I learned that all the training I was doing leading up to the hike does not really transfer to long distance backpacking in a meaningful way. I also learned that all physical exertion and pain generated by my hike does not transfer very well back to my training routine. So basically, I just took a month off, but it was worth it beyond measure. My son is still going and has about 260 miles under his belt. I wish I had his vision when I was his age! At any rate I think my race plans for this summer have been pushed back at least a month. Hope everyone is doing well!

Tom great to have you back. FYI the group has slowed quit a bit but we are still popping in and out.

Bill it went really good. I did roughly 12 miles in three days for the Torch Run and then watched and helped out as the kids went after gold. The unified relay team I’m on got a bronze and we had a blast. On another not I have decided that I do not need a Tri Bike and will be selling mine shortly and switching to a road bike. I just want the versatility of the road bike and know that the little time I save on a TT is not going to put me on or off a podium. Therefore I’m saving up and will put the TT bike sale money with it and buy a really nice road bike to be my next 5 or so year bike. I also want one to do things like the MS 150 and possibly RAGBRI one day which a road bike is needed for.

Hi Turtles,

Thought I'd check in and see how everybody is doing. Hope all is well.

I've been taking time off from training but plan to resume on Monday. I've done a few walks and a few gym sessions lately and I must admit I really miss training and working up a sweat. I've also put on a few pounds so I need to work them off. On the positive it's nice to get around without any knee pain.

Winter is approaching and we've already had a few wet, cold and windy days. While it's tempting to stay indoors I need to get out and about.

Who has any races scheduled?

Only a “fair” couple of weeks activities. Walks mainly during our travel days; hard to get back into the habit one evening back; swims were shorter than before. At least I remained active.

Will start outdoor swims this coming week

Very quiet here....how goes it?!

Bill good to hear.

I’ve been running and strength training but not logging here because I switched to an iwatch which does not transfer. I started riding today and started a challenge with my daughter. I was reading an article in runners magazine while my wife had her gallbladder removed. It was about streaks and building a routine, which they suggested 1 mile per day (actual mile for exercise not just daily walking around) to start Memorial Day and end on the 4th of July. I think it will help my daughter plus most days I will do it with her giving us some time together. Tonight I ran 2 miles and then walked 1.6 with her. Haven’t decided yet if I’ll do the half on vacation or not because I may have found a better family location to visit than where the run is, but we’ll see.

Well I did the Half Marathon on Sunday and had a blast. I completed it not having to walk any portion of it, which is a first for me. I held a nice steady pace of around 10:45 and smiled when one person commented that I was like a steady robot that they paced off of. I was sore the next few days because I was not properly prepared but it was a victory and I’m fully recovered now and ready to hit it tomorrow morning when we get home from vacation. Let me add that the running conditions are awesome in Massive and their average runners are stronger than in Texas.

Thanks Todd!!

Well, I’ve been doing some contemplating to determine if my “compete (use by) date” has come and gone. Just haven’t had the same sense of urgency to do an event as I’ve had in the past. My bike time has been zip, zero, nadda like forever......still doing the swim “training” and what is my “road work”...

Still...I just sent an inquiry to the race officials of a sprint in October. So, I’ll see what they say....maybe the “use by” date is still ok!! ;0)!!

Hey Bill,

I hear you. At times it is hard to stay motivated. I struggled a few times last summer but found a few motivators you might like to try:

Do it for a cause and raise some $$$ for a charity that means something to you
Do it for your friends that can't swim , bike and run or in memory of family or friends
Join a training group and mix with younger people to feel young at heart
Participate in a shorter distance race
Join a team that does a relay for the race and do your favorite leg in the race.

You can also volunteer on race day to stay involved and see if you want to race again.

No shame if it is time to hang up the wet suit, rack the bike and put the running gear away. You've outlasted most of your peers.

Hi Turtles

Finally started my pre season training last week after a few false starts.

Last week I had 2 swims, 2 rides, 3 runs and a game of golf. The highlight was a combo session on Thursday at the gym with a 200 m swim, 10 K bike and a 3 K run. I hope to do a combo session every Thursday.

Hope everybody is managing to work up a sweat and enjoying their training.

Even though my "season" (and I use that word with as much humor as humanly possible) ended Saturday, do y'all mind if I jump in? Full disclosure: I'm a Clyde (the clyde/athena thread seems to have gone the way of the dodo), and coming back from a 3 year hiatus. I do have 5 events under my belt, but I still definitely an amateur. Starting this week, the plan is to start training for a trifecta of PR's next season.

Bill sorry for my late reply to this but here is my $.02. You know how many times I’ve told you how much you motivate me and how I hope to have your drive to push forward like you have through everything. I say that to say that I’ve also thought about you and your situation the other way. The conclusion I came to (in my mind as of now) is that I would want to do as you have done and do what I could for as long as possible. I however would not want to do something that would take away from my overall quality of life or put me in an unnecessary state of chronic pain because that would not benefit me or my loved ones. I guess what the future me is tell you, and hopefully I take my own advice if it happens, is to evaluate where you and your body are. You have nothing to prove to anyone and i guarantee have motivated others by what you’ve already done. You love this sport then stay involved where you can, be the swim leg of a relay, continue as you have to volunteer and share you story and encouragement. Quality of life in my opinion should be your number 1 factor when making the decision.

Rob glad to see you back at it and way to kick it off with a bang.

WebFoot you are more than welcome to join and the group was slow but picked back up again. I’ve started logging here again daily and Rob back and Bill is always checking in. No need to worry about Clyde or anything. I’m a slow procrastinating back of pace age grouper. We just try to motivate each other and don’t make technical or crazy.

Gonna try something different in the morning. The Functional Strength Gym (not Cross fit) I go to three days a week is gonna have a class tomorrow at 9:00 a. So my plan is to get up early and go for a 30ish mile ride ending at the gym where I’ll do the 50 minute workout before getting back on the bike and riding the 7 miles home. I’m viewing it as brick so to speak. We will see how it goes.
