Overall Rank = /2000
Age Group = Clydesdale 225+
Age Group Rank = 10/24
Pre-race routine:

Got up at 3:30 (WTF before Alarm !) Arrived early , got decent parking , not enough sleep the week before.
Packet pickup in the dark , Start to Set up in transition beside cranky neighbour. " Is there a problem? " is his way to saying hello to a fellow competitor. Maybe its me thats cranky. Fortunately there are
Plenty of good spots left so I move to the next rack besides a friend
who just showed up.

I should have been well rested the week before. I was not .
Ate Small bowl of cereal, banana , apple , little chocolate,
Go Bathroom , I am early so no wait at the WC and they are still cleanish.
Event warmup:

Walk, talk to all my teammates , everone is in good spirit , no one slept well the night before , we go to listen to nicely sung national anthem , watch waves start , get in the water and swim 100 m . Feels good . Lets go ! WTF Heart at 90 !
Oh well ! its the usual pre race Crazy HR , HR will settle down after 1st buoy .
I did Something new for race Day : I am wearing a new TRI team shirt under my Wetsuit for the swim.
Swim
  • 16m 45s
  • 880 yards
  • 01m 54s / 100 yards
Comments:

Good swim TRI for me All freestyle , A first for me ! Last year i did this race all breastroke , Relaxed a little after first buoy. Arms felt good , little or no fatigue so my effort was at the right level, breathing was good , pacing was good . with slight pause with 1 arm up front to glide and roll , Like a long swim in the pool where you dont want to let yourself go anaerobic . Its hard to hold back because there are swimmers all around and you want to pass or go faster. I got a good smack on the head from a swimmer that was a little eratic on my left .
At the second buoy I start to catch people in the earlier wave , different coloured caps , and they are easy to pass. So that is motivating. All that work on my swimming has paid some dividends.....
Should have started on the outside left to avoid traffic.
What would you do differently?:

Start on the left and at the front , got stuck behind slow swimmers
I have made the most improvements this year at swimming. Freestyle is a little faster than breastroke and my legs are very fresh when coming out of the water. I was very happy with the TRI swim and the run into transition 1. It was as good as I did in the rehearsals and in my time trials at the pool.
Transition 1
  • 03m 29s
Comments:

Good transition , ran all the way from the beach to the bike , passed a few people walking this part. Got wetsuit off , cleaned feet and put on socks and shoes , grab gels . The new shirt is working out just fine , no problem swimming with it under the wetsuit. Plus its very confortable and has nice big pockets at the back. And I get lots of free cheering . Ran with the bike shoes to the mount line , All at a good clip... I could rest a little when I get on the bike ...
What would you do differently?:

Maybe a little faster at getting shoes on . Got everything and ran in and out with bike , passing people in transition area
Bike
  • 1h 04m 22s
  • 18 miles
  • 16.78 mile/hr
Comments:

Soft tire at mile 9 at the turnaround , i could feel my back end wobble a little , climbed bad hill at Leo Carillo and stopped to investigate , was still firmish like at 60psi , decided to add little air with co2 cartridge and chance it home , no luck , let more air out instead...
A good samaritan gave me a shot of air with his CO2 , thank God i would have walked home . I was really pissed at my Co2 failure . So decided to nurse my bike home , hoping the tire would last 20 mins. I did not use the aerobars and did not ride very hard for the second half of the course. As i rode past the transition area at mile 17 I had some thoughts of cutting the course If my tire was not holding up. But It was OK so I finished the bike .
I decided to shift my focus on my run split and see how much faster I am this year. Since I could not control the flat and the equipement failure.

What would you do differently?:

I Probably went out too hard in the first half , Heart rate was 160 , could not sustain speed throughout course. Learn to use emergency tire fixing kit better.
Transition 2
  • 02m 13s
Comments:

Good transition , Seem to take forever to put shoes on ,
What would you do differently?:

Missed my rack by one . Because I had moved racks in the dark and with tire puncture and fear of DNF worries had forgotten where my rack was actually 1 away. No Biggie , Shrek was cheering me on, Bring balloons next time...
Run
  • 37m 43s
  • 4 miles
  • 09m 26s  min/mile
Comments:

Good Run , would have been better with more rest during the week and not having lost time on the bike . ave 9+ min/miles
What would you do differently?:

Sleep enough the week before a 2 hour race like this one.
Post race
Warm down:

walk , cheer the rest of the DW team
Sit down for the nice brunch.
Hang out at the beach for the afternoon . :)

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Lack of sleep , Get more rest , Some residual fatigue from the triathlon the week before, It was most noticable on the run.

Event comments:

Well organised , well marked course , roomy transition area . :)
Bike course is a little tight coming out of T1 with the cones and all , Our poor team captain Scott had a bad fall on his bike after hitting a cone. But he got up got cleaned-up by the first Aid people and finished the race, He Rocks ! What a fearless leader. Its a really cool course. The hills make you work hard onthe bike and the run at the end is always a challenge. Thank God its flat !

Good job especially after a tough one last week.

I needed the week rest.

Way to fight adversity.

Cheers

Thanks Golf Mark

I am very tempted to do Hermosa Beach on OCT 15 , but have to see what my shedule is. So i hope it does not sell out soon.

I just figured out where I got the flat tire . I jumped several hard speed bumps in the ZUMA beach parking lot as I was way too eager to get going on the bike and did not want to wait for slower taffic at the speed bump and my back tire hit all of them hard , probably causing the slow flat. I have done these jumps in practice and got away with it but I was not going as fast. So Some patience in the first mile would have been wise.

This is why I like the LA TRI bike course better . There a very wide road (Venice Blvd) to cycle at your pace.

Way to go, two in a row! And wow, you really did the entire swim breaststroke last year? I relayed the swim this year (wave 3, yay, much better than 15 at LATri) and can't imagine doing it breaststroke! Sounds like you're having a great late-summer season.

You should do Hermosa! Season coming to an end.

You learn from adversity. In golf, I learned more from my bad tournaments than my good ones.

Will keep that in mind if I do Malibu next year -- I prefer to do Los Angeles and won't do it back to back weeks like you though.

Cheers

Thanks I would have prefered them two weeks apart like last year.

How did your swim go?

Last year was my first year racing . I could not swim more than 50 m freestyle . I did all my training and racing Breastroke. My distance speed is 50m in about a minute. Plus in breastroke the sighting is better for an Ocean swim and to avoid the wandering swimmers.

A friend told me to read : Total Immersion book and that encouraged me to try freestyle .
Also did a SCAQ (master swim) clinic and that helped clean up my freestyle stroke.

I had a good swim, but not great (my LA swim was better). I made two rookie mistakes (I have only done two ocean races, Redondo and LA; this is my first season).

I'm not good at the beach run in or out yet, and the all-women relays started with all-men relays and men 25-29, so I was surrounded by very very tall guys. Usually I start right up front but this time I was afraid they'd run me over (I am only 5 feet tall) and so I didn't line up at the VERY front (I don't think ANY women did). I was the first person to dive, and I could see everyone else still running through the water, in my way! Then I had a hard time getting around some of the slower ones in the water; one guy almost drowned me after the first buoy! He wasn't swimming very straight and had a very wide stroke and so kept hitting me on the back as I tried to pass. Finally I just dropped back and swam to his other side, and that was the last I saw of him.

The other error was not picking something big to sight on the exit. I did that really well at LA (well, someone told me what to aim for, given the current) but in Malibu I didn't think of it, and I ended up about 50 yards too far down the beach -- not bad, and surrounded by other swimmers, some a lot further away from the finish chute than I was, but it cost me some serious time because I have a leg injury and can't run much, so I always get passed on the sand. But I still had a 15-min swim time, which is okay for a rookie like me, and now I know what to do next time.

Oops.  Now I feel bad.  Your flat was all my fault.

The Sunday before the actual Malibu Tri I went and did an ocean swim and rode the bike course.  There were all sorts of people doing the same but I noticed a ton of people wearing DreamWorks Tri Team gear.  Just about at the turnaround I got a flat.  Flipped my bike over, took off the back tire and one by one DreamWorks people started passing me.  They were all riding by themselves, not in one big group but they all had one thing in common.  Not ONE acknowledged me or asked if I needed any help - not one.  OK, I didn't need any help but you never just pass someone with their bike turned upside down and not ask if they are ok.  I fixed my flat and finished my ride, but while riding back I put a curse on the DreamWorks team for the race.

I guess I should have guessed with such a big group there would be at least one BTer involved, but I didn't.  I'm sorry I caused your flat and congrats on finishing your race.  You should educate your fellow workers on being thoughtful bicyclists at all times.  I do have to admit of all the big teams out there DreamWorks were the best about not drafting during the race.

Congrats again!

  • Considering your obstacles That a good swim time . They should really have let the relay women go in a different wave than the men. Perhaps even adding another couple of waves to have smaller groups in the water.

My single mishap in the water is that I got smacked on the head pretty good around the second buoy. I never get that much contact in the pool. Last year when I breastroked in my races i kicked a lot of people that swam too near me .
I did not do it on purpose but this is how i move forward .

No worries and Thanks ! You did not cause my flat I too got passed by my own team during the race without an offer to help . I can understand that they dont want to loose time by stopping . I will try and remember to be curteous during my bike rides . A very nice cyclist who was out training that morning helped me out .

Drafting ....? What is drafting ?
