Sunny
Total Time = 1h 20m 59s
Overall Rank = 135/289
Age Group = M45-49
Age Group Rank = 8/8
Pre-race routine:

woke up super early. 3:45.

bagel w/ peanut butter.

coffee on the way.

set up transition, without any issues. i didn't check the gearing before the race.chain had to adjust once i started the bike. whoops
Event warmup:

got there a little later than i wanted to. i did a quick warm up run, i didn't get in the water before hand.

they added an olympic distance and that went off first, so my timings got a bit screwed up. race started at 7, and i didn't get into the water until 8 am.
Swim
  • 08m 2s
  • 440 yards
  • 01m 50s / 100 yards
Comments:

had a good swim. i swam straight and just sort of swam. i pushed only once in the beginning to get away from two guys.

i had to stop swimming twice as there were two different people that had some severe navigation issues and almost swam over me.

could have gone faster
What would you do differently?:

swim a bit faster, but i felt super comfortable.
Transition 1
  • 03m 9s
Comments:

there was a run in from the beach and i had to slow to a very slow walk. i tried running but it was too much. i think i probably lost a minute here. everything felt out of whack.

i also had issues finding the lanyard to unzip my wetsuit, and then it got stuck on my heels.

had an issue with my shoes as i usually race these races in tri specific bike shoes. i had regular road shoes so i had to put socks on and then the boa closures. it took a bit.
What would you do differently?:

tri specific shoes for these quick races.

need to practice getting the wetsuit off.
Bike
  • 34m 58s
  • 10 miles
  • 17.16 mile/hr
Comments:

took me a bit to get up to speed. it felt like i was going slow, some gusty winds and computer was showing me at 14 miles an hour, i think there is something wrong with it, i might need a new one.

once i got going, i felt very comfortable HR average was 164 but i felt great.

drank lots in the beginning and didn't have much left at the end.

i did stop to help a girl who had crashed. i saw her after and her handlebars were all skewed to the right. i tried to pass her and keep going but i felt i could help her. unfortunatley she needed an allen wrench to fix it and i didn't have one. this probably cost me a few minutes, but i would do it again. it wasn't safe the way she was riding, for her or others.
What would you do differently?:

more bike training, especially speed work. get on the kickr more and then get outside and get into some harder efforts.
Transition 2
  • 01m 24s
Comments:

almost crashed as i usually jump off with bare feet but i couldn't do that.

ran with my bike shoes on, and this probably cost me some seconds. took my bike shoes off and put on my running shoes. then i went to put my race belt on instead of removing my helmet and just grabbing the belt and putting it on as i ran.

it's been over a year since i needed to focus on fast transitions so those things will come back to me.
What would you do differently?:

tri specific bike shoes that don't cause my toes to go numb!
Run
  • 33m 29s
  • 3.5 miles
  • 09m 34s  min/mile
Comments:

started out a bit too fast. was about 8 min/mile pace and then slowed down.i was getting some side stitches so couldn't maintain that pace.

i did pass some folks and that was good. i got passed by one woman and was able to keep pace with her for about a half mile until she dropped me.

it got very hot and there wasn't a lot of shade. i grabbed water at the aid station and dumped it on me. i probably needed to hydrate more in the morning and on the bike.
What would you do differently?:

i need to get some speed work in on the run as well. i felt pretty good overall, but i've only been doing slow paced runs. my hamstring pain comes and goes so it's tough to push too hard. i can push pretty good but i pay for it later.
Post race
Warm down:

stopped running and drank water. got a picture taken with my son, and checked the results. hung out for a bit and then left.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

no speed work.

no tri specific bike shoes

Event comments:

Good race. They added an olympic distance so maybe i'll do that in the Fall.
