Subject: Excessive tightness in upper hammies&glutes when using aerobars
Hi

I've recently added a set of aerobars to my road bike and had a professional fit done however I've found that I can't use them for long without experiencing severe and lasting tightness in my upper hamstrings and glutes. I was wondering if this is down to my lack of flexibility and so need to focus on stretching more or down to the fact I need to build up gradually to riding in that position for longer periods of time.

I'd recommend going back to your bike fitter for a follow up. Ask if it's included in what you previously paid; a lot of them throw in a 30-minute follow up session after you've had a chance to ride with the new fit.

Gradual introduction of the new setup would probably help.
Over 5 to 6 weeks, go 15%, 25%, 50%, 75%, 85%, 100%. When not using the bars, just ride the bars like normal.

It can impact the hammies for sure.

BUT, solid functional strength and flexibility routines in your weekly schedule don't hurt as well!
