I will often just keep one ear peice in and clip the other to my shirt...that way I can talk to those I want to ...but I can still hear the beat and be inspired by the songs that I choose to run to...I love the community spirit at small races, but sometimes there is no one around to talk to...

I don't see any harm in running with an MP3 player. I've been thinking of getting one. Does anyone have any good recomendations for me?
Thanks ....and what would I expect to pay for a decent one anyway?

my favorite is the iPod Nano. you can pay anywhere from 149 to 249 depending on how many songs you want. i'm an apple addict, so that may be the reason, but they're so small and just perfect for running.

Wear the Ipod if you want to. In a 5k you shouldn't be running at a level where "chatting" is possible. A 5k is all out for the entire race, whether that be a 6min/mile or a 10 min/mile.

What about 11? Did anyone mention 11 min/mile pace?

Brings up a great point:  why are headphones not allowed in tri's??  I know the answer will be about the bike leg and hearing others say, "On your left".  But seriously, does anyone really think that it would be a hazard?  How many times in the past did headphones cause problems in a race that warrants that rule?  Probably one dumba$$ somewhere caused a pileup and now the rule is nationwide.  Weak and lame!  Why can't we strap one on during the run leg?  That would be do-able.

I say wear it.  You can always chat with eveyone post race at the bagel tent.

It is more a safety “don’t sue me” measure cuz 99.9% of tris are open to traffic (unlike road races). IF something bad goes wrong while an athlete is running wearing headphones the RD would be the 1st person to point the finger at. BUT if it isn't allowed and you break the rules is YOUR fault!
