Morning,

Hit the trainer at 0:Dark:30. Good easy spin to keep the blood flowing.

Another very busy week shaping up, just hold on and see where it takes us.

Be safe out there, BT.

I hit the bike trainer this morning for 60 minutes.  It was a really difficult workout, but after I was done I felt relaxes and rested.

We have our Youth Running Club Pre-season 1-mile and 5K races this Saturday.  Then I will have a month without races before we start our race season where we will be doing four races in a five-week span.   So... this week I looked at what adjustments I could make to my training. I usually do all my long bike rides and brick runs on Saturday morning.   Since I will likely be pacing a 5-year-old girl at all the Youth Running Club Races and won't be able to do a long workout on the weekend those weeks I may need to do long bike rides in the morning during the week.  I change my bike plan a few weeks back.  After finishing an 8 week FTP builder block I had planned to go into volume building to take my long rides/brick workouts from 90 minutes up to 3-1/2 hours.  I changed plans last minute though and instead of going onto a build phase started another FTP builder plan that runs for 12 weeks.  So...I will keep my long rides at the 90-minute range.  I, however, have an Olympic race 2-3 weeks after the 12-week plan ends so I will likely add more endurance ride time to the end of the FTP builder long rides so I can get up to al least 2 hours ride in the morning during our race season for the Youth Running Club.  This week I just have a 60-minute ride on Saturday so I will get that done before I have to be to out Club race at 8:00 AM.  :-)

4.3 mile run this evening on the treadmill. I’ve grown to enjoy running on the treadmill, especially for my easy runs.

Have a 100k bike ride this weekend with a large group. It’s going to be quite cold that morning so I’m trying to figure out what to wear. I’ve never ridden my bike in cold, or cool, temperatures.

Looking like a couple of degrees above freezing. I ordered some toe covers, thermal leg sleeves and a wind proof jacket. I guess I could wear some layers underneath and just shed at the aid stations as needed. Low 60s is the coldest I’ve ridden a bike in. Gonna be a shock I’m sure! Think I have some decent gloves as well.

About the coldest I have road the bike in was 20 deg F.  I have run in temperatures down to 5 deg F.  For cycling in 32-35 deg F I like to wear one layer on top that is short sleeve and then two layers that are long sleeved.  I do about the same thing on the bottom.  That is one layer of shorts and two layers of long tights.  I always go with two layers of socks and alway wish I had done thicker.  The feet get really cold on the bike in those temperatures.  Running I am okay with two pairs of socks, by cycling My feet freeze with two layers of socks.  I put a stocking cap on under the helmet and I have never needed anything more.  The hands are about the same story as the feet.  If I put two layers of cloth gloves on the wind blows right through them and I hand freeze.  For doing morning chores I will get a used breed back and put one layer of socks on then put the plastic bread bag over my foot and then put the second layer of socks over the top of the break bag.  I have never done that on the bike, but it does wonders for the feet while doing chores.  It probably inst safe to put bread bags over your hands on the bike but you might be able to rig up some type of hood on the front of the handles that will block the wind from your hands. 32-35 deg F is doable.  If you have never done colder that 60 deg F it will be memorable but really won't be too bad.

Thanks for the tips Curtis! The high is 60 so I’m hoping if I can just get through the first hour or so I will warm up enough to get comfortable. I’ve already paid my registration fee and I’m too cheap just to eat it! A friend mentioned wearing surgical gloves under regular gloves, I might try that as I have a stash around here somewhere. Not sure if I have enough room in my cycling shoes for two pair of socks.

Try using duct tape to close the air holes in your bike shoes, specially if it's going to be wet. This helped me in Lake Placid.

Start temp in Placid was high 30's, crept into the low 50's by the end. I had on a thermal top bike jersey and wind breaker. Bottoms were bike shorts and tall socks.

The duct tape on the shoes was magic, I used black tape on black shoes.

Thanks for the tips! Just went to town on my aero road helmet to close up the vents. The bike shop hosting the event just sent out an email saying they will have bags at each aid station for riders to put clothes in, makes me feel better about layering and shedding as I go.
