Swim
Comments: This was probably tied for my worst swim which was Cleveland Nationals. It was awful. I felt terrible most of the time, waves in my face and drinking lake water. Trouble getting a rhythm with the waves and breathing. Just getting tired at the end. No side of the triangle worked well for me. But my sighting was good at least. I was also getting hot. The sleeveless suit would have been better. What would you do differently?: More open water swimming, including choppy water. But I don't think I'll ever really do well in these conditions. At least I made faster progress than nationals. Transition 1
Comments: It was a long walk up the hill to transition. I was so unhappy after the swim, I didn't even attempt to run the hill. I just walked and got my HR down. Took my time in transition too. Shorter socks will be a must next time. And I only had my road shoes, so I need to get my old cleats back on my tri shoes. This was a VERY long T1 for me. 5/8 in AG What would you do differently?: short sock, tri shoes, just move more quickly Bike
Comments: My legs felt tired compared to my HR. Not sure if it was my bike gears feeling rough, or after back to back long training weeks. But didn't try to push it because I wanted to have legs for the run which I knew was going to be hot. What would you do differently?: Get my bike to a shop! Also, need to get a saddle that will work better for me. This one is still rubbing the inside of my thighs and feels hard. Going to be tough for 56 miles. And get an aero helmet that doesn't hurt my head. Transition 2
Comments: Better than T1. Moved along, but didn't rush it. 1/8 AG What would you do differently?: Nothing I guess. Well, maybe grab lip balm next time. For Kerrville, consider spraying on sunscreen on my arms. Run
Comments: Ran smart and keep my HR in Zone 3, which meant walking some of the hills. Walked all of the aid stations and drank electrolyte and water and each plus water over head. Wiped arms and face with cold towel at last stop. Picked up the effort for the last 1K. Never felt overheated. Ran comfortably. And my mood picked up. What would you do differently?: Not much. This was really good. Remember to hold back on the bike, and keep the first half of the run in control. Post race
Warm down: Drink water, choc recovery drink, hot dog, cry because I was really missing my Austin friends. What limited your ability to perform faster: Many things. But my primary goal was to get out there and figure out what I needed to adjust before 70.3 Des Moines. Last updated: 2021-06-08 12:00 AM

Got to the race site early. Racked my bike close to an edge. Got everything set up and checked it many times. Walked the transition. Tried to stay relaxed.
Got into the water up to my knees, but ran out of time to get fully into the water. Allow more time to get my wetsuit on next time. And if I don't do a swim warmup, do some arm circles at least. Get the HR up before I start.
