awful swim, trouble breathing due to cough, couldn't get any rythym going. Turns out I had the beginnings of bronchitis, diagnosed a week later.

try not to be affected with allergies, train more in open water

Nice race for someone with bronchitis!  I know you're swim times were off because of it, but your bike and run were great!  Nice job.  I'm just starting to train for my first sprint tri next spring and haven't hit the pool or done much riding yet.  I'm guessing this wasn't your first race with those other times being so decent. 

Any advice for a novice?
