Total Time = 53m 20s
Overall Rank = 166/720
Age Group = 30-39
Age Group Rank = 55/127
Pre-race routine:

Parked car about 1 mile from starting area (Ocean Beach beachfront at Hwy 1 & Balboa St.), and walked/jogged back to starting area.

Run
  • 53m 20s
  • 6 miles
  • 08m 53s  min/mile
Comments:

If you don't run regularly on sand, be prepared for an unpleasant surprise. The sand just sucks the energy right out of you with each step. Then there's the really WET and STICKY sand traps that you learn to avoid at all costs. Add to that the waves washing up on shore chasing you "uphill" on the shorebreak--and you have all the fun you can handle for 4 of the 6 miles of the run. Your average HR will jump a few bpm's.
What would you do differently?:

Run on sand as much as I can to get my body acclimated to the different demands on the body.
Post race
Warm down:

Running around finish area looking for wife and kids.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Stupidly doing a hard Brick, plus swim intervals the day before, and treating this as just another "training day"--because its only a "turkey trot". Screw that. As soon as you're on the starting line, even if were just a footrace with the neighborhood kids!, your competitive side doesn't want anything but a command performance.

Event comments:

Good fun and a challenging run on the sand, in a BEAUTIFUL setting on Ocean Beach in San Francisco. Big, rolling sets of Pacific Ocean waves washing up onshore just below the Cliff House.

Great race/ learning experience.  I know what you mean about the competative side.   sounds like a lovely setting.  I'm impressed with your sub-9-min-miles... especially in wet sand, dodging the Pacific!
