Subject: question about brick workouts...
I don't pick up my bike until the end of January so for the last week I have been going to the gym everyday and doing the following workout: 25 minutes on the stationary bike at 85-95 cadence immediately followed by a 1.5-2 mile walk/jog on the treadmill. I figured until I start incorporating a few days of swimming a week, it would be a good way to build up to my first T1 in mid-June. And it's a great way to get my heart rate up and sweat alot. I have had very little soreness in my legs and no pain in the knees since I started this routine. Is this workout o.k. to do 5-6 times a week? Gradually increasing my time on each? Or should I split up the activity..one day on bike..next on treadmill? If it matters I do an hour of resistance training three times a week following this cardio workout.....

Thanks,
Chris

I am hoping to write a brick-article for the month of February in the RUN section of the website.
I think your idea of doing bricks at the gym is good. I do that sometimes.
My personal experience though is that the stationary bike is not as hard as riding outside, and I have never really felt too tired, while doing a gym brick.

One way to get your legs more tired on the stationary bike is to try and alternate 1 minute-intervals using only one leg (makes sense?). Your quads will definitely feel this and you should feel it during the run also... Or you can try 1-2-3 minutes hard spins intervals.
I would not brick 5 times a week. Do regular bike and run workouts and make 1 or 2 of them bricks. You will have time as the season approaches to do real bricks outside.
Hope my opinion helps.

smeeko,
Thanks!! Your advice is pretty consistant with what I have been getting. I will make the neccesary changes to my schedule.

Do you have any advice on how to make the transition from treadmill to asphalt once I lose a few pounds?

Thanks...

RunTexas,

I am in Houston and new to this sport as well. You mentioned weight in your post, I am at 265 right now. I would be interested in any "real world" comments you may have on weight loss. I have lost over 30 lbs. so far. By the way, are you a member of Houston Racing or any other triathlon club here in the area?

Chad,
If you will email me at work I will be happy to share what has been working for me. I have a great spread sheet I created to help me keep track of my calorie/protein/fat/carb/sodium intake. As well as my multi sport workout plan....
