I'm in... Just registered.

I booked a room at the Boulevard. They said they had one room left and gave it to me. I'm pumped but pretty nervous about it. Right now I've got 7 months to get ready for it.

grandhavenbill - 2006-12-06 12:37 PM Hey all. I'll be there too. I live about an hour's drive up the coast in Grand Haven. To the north of St. Joe/Benton Harbor the towns of South Haven, Saugatuck, Holland, and Grand Haven; all within very easy driving distance (an hour or less). Heck, you buy the post race beverages and I'll offer my extra room and plenty of floor space in the basement to any of you that want to crash in Grand Haven. Don't forget about the Grand Haven Festival of Races the first Sunday in July. We will be doing a sprint, oly, and HIM; a great pre-Steelhead tune-up!!

This is going to be my backup race if I don't qualify for 70.3 worlds at FL 70.3.   I heard it was a great race, so I'm looking forward to it.

Grandhavenbill, I might take you up on that offer if it's still available.  Thanks!

I want to sign up but its 2 weeks after my first him. Proabably not a good idea I am assuming. I will do marathons in that time frame though but since Spirit of Racine will be my first HIM I do not know if I should. I been tempted though. Its not too far but I would have to find a place to stay the night before which sounds like will be getting hard to do also.

Lizard13 told me that Hampton Inn allows pets, if anyone is worried about that. Right now Im at the Holiday Inn Express about 10 minutes out but may change to the Hampton if my husband wants a friend for the day

Both of us are signed up for Steelhead. We are using this race as a training day for IM WI.

We raced Steelhead last year and had a great time. I recommend staying at the Holiday Inn Express, it is probably the best hotel in the area to stay at, so don't give up your reservation. Yes, it is only 10 minutes, but it is worth it for the comfy beds. Most hotels we looked into when we went over there to visit the area last year before the race are not in that great of condition.

Good luck and hold onto that reservation....

The "crash pad" I was referring to is our spare bedroom and any available floor space (plus the sectional) in the basement. Got me thinking though, we have a large yard and we could indeed pitch tents if there are enough folks looking for a free place to stay......

oh ok. hehe I got grand Haven and Lincoln pines confused. Lincoln pines is the place my aunt and uncle has home in a camp ground. now I wish why I knew grand haven. I swear I been there before your some. Well I have to decide wether to do it or not. Time will tell.

Allright, ima dope, so I didn't get around to getting a hotel for the race until now...and I can confirm that there are NO hotel rooms left in St. Joe's or Benton Harbor.  That should be the Steelhead challenge - getting a hotel room. Dammit.

I'm at the Super 8 motel and hair care center in Sawyer - it looked clean, and had availability.  Anyone with experience with this ho-tel?

Fellow Steelheader's, my offer from earlier in the year for the Grand Haven crash pad is still open. I am 70 miles north of Benton Harbor, an easy hour's drive.

As hotels continue to fill, plenty of room in the back yard for tents too! ;-)

Waves, a couple hundred people to each wave.  That's all that will safely fit on the pier at one time for the jump-off....

If I remember correctly they were maybe 5 minutes apart last year, but were going to increase the gap between waves to 8-10 minutes to allow previous waves to clear and people to assemble on the pier with enough time.

Check out Warren Dunes State Park.  Its on the lake about 30 minutes (~22mi) South of the race site.  Camped there as a kid and it's still very nice.  Awesome beach and good size dunes.

I'm so excited, I can't believe the time is nearing so quickly! I have a room booked at the Hampton Inn, hope there are no glitches with the reservation because sleeping in the car would be a bummer.

We need to organize drinks or something for after the race, it seems we have a sizeable and merry bunch!

A note on training:
I live in Glenview (suburb north of Chicago), and being new to the area I'm wondering where you guys go for longer rides (30mi+). Any recommendations or links would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Martin

Hey Murph -

I too am in for Steelhead and live in the city of Chicago. Like you I have had to find longer bike routes as well. I don't know if this will help, but, if you are close to sheridan road check that out. It takes you all the way up to Wisconsin which I've done. Also, all along sheridan rd are all kinds of little neighborhood streets to ride down which have some descent hills. (for the city that is) For us city folks our options are a little limited but you just gotta make due.

There is a KOA in Coloma/St Joseph. I reserved one of the camping kabins. The price is right and is a nice cross between camping and hotel.

McFuzz raced last year and the boys and I jockstrapped.  This year we are all jockstrapping.  I even offered to let the boys stay home this year and they asked if "those guys that crashed our dinner" were gonna be there.  When I told them "Yep" they said they would go.
