Overall Rank = 38/80
Age Group = M 40-44
Age Group Rank = 5/10
Pre-race routine:

Signed up the day before, though I had been thinking about it for some time. First duathlon. Figured it would be a good idea since the bike and run are by far my two weakest legs of a triathlon.

Woke up at 6 am. Ate blueberry muffins and drank Gatorade. Made it to Boerne at about 7:15 for 8 am start.

Boerne is about 30 miles from San Antonio, TX.
Event warmup:

Short jogs and stretching.
Run
  • 00m
  • 3.11 miles
  •  min/mile
Comments:

Nice course, though drizzly weather caused a lot of mud to accumulate on the soles of the shoes. Felt like running with ankle weights for about a mile.

Timing system not working, so no split available. The run felt fine.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing.
Transition 1
  • 00m
Comments:

For some reason my helmet straps seemed to be adjust improperly. I put it on and took it off a couple if times before it seemed comfortable. Had helmet and gloves on seat, under a plastic bag to protect from rain.

Timing system not working, so no split available.

What would you do differently?:

Check the helmet before the race. Hang the helmet on the bike, even if it is raining.
Bike
  • 00m
  • 15.6 miles
  • 0.00 mile/hr
Comments:

Overall felt strong. In aero position at most times, except up some hills.

Shoe lace was getting stuck in chain, so I stopped to adjust. Soon thereafter the chain came off, so I stopped again. I probably lost about two minutes, maybe more, taking care of the shoe lace and chain.

I expected tired neck muscles from being in aero position (new to tri-bikes, I usually get a sore neck from looking forward), but it never happened this time. Hooray!

Got passed when stopped, when drinking from water bottle, and when eating GU. Passed a few on the way also.

Timing system not working, so no split available.
What would you do differently?:

Make sure shoe laces don't become an issue again. Get more used to new bike so that the chain doesn't become an issue again either.

Get an aerobar bottle someting in 2007.
Transition 2
  • 00m
Comments:

Somebody parked their bike in my space, so I parked a few bikes down. Couldn't find my transition bag since it was blocked by a bike. Lost some time looking for the bag. All I wanted was a cap to keep the drizzle off my head and face.

Timing system not working, so no split available.
What would you do differently?:

Leave cap on bike, even if it gets wet, to avoid having to find and/or unzip a bag with cold fingers.
Run
  • 00m
  • 3.11 miles
  •  min/mile
Comments:

Same route as first run. Legs felt very sluggish coming off the bike. After about a mile my legs seemed to be better, though very clearly still tired.
What would you do differently?:

More bricks.

Event comments:

I'd rate the race much higher if the timing system had worked properly. Maybe the rain cause the problem??

Given that the run and bike are the weakest part of a tri, this was good preparation for me. In fact, I may substitute a duathlon in January for a sprint tri that has a short swim.
