Subject: Bikes for Big Boys - Need Help for Buying

I have been saving up my pennies to buy a bike this spring and I am looking for some help.  I am 6'7" and so far I have simply been riding on my Bianchi Hybrid with road slicks that I put on with flat pedals and MB handle bars.  I have no experience riding with aerobars and plan on getting a bike with clipless pedals.  I have done only moderate shopping so far and have not been professionally fitted but I seem to require about a 63cm or 64 cm bike.

I am open to either a road bike or a tri bike and will pretty much be riding the bike exclusively for tri training and racing.  Many of the brands I check out online stop at about a size 61cm.  What kind of bikes have you bigger guys been riding and what do you recommend.  By the way I am willing to spend up to $1,500 but can't really go much higher.

It seems like the Giant bikes are worth looking at - I tested an OCR2 XL and that seemed to fit fairly well so I like that idea but then I come back to if I should really be getting a tri bike.  I am not looking for huge discussion on tri vs. road bikes since I know those thread are out there but I am just looking for some direction on brands so I can find LBS that carry them and see how they fit.

yeah I wish I had infomation for you. I kinda up in the air about size also. I am just a little shorter than you.

I just feel I need to go to the bike shop and have them to a fitting for me to find out exactly what size I need. The place I am going to will then have you ride there test bike with those measurements that is hooked to a computrainer so you can see exactly what I need and I can go from there. I am hoping not to go to a custom bike since they are so expensive. They honestly do not even know if they can get a bike in my size and want to mesure me first before ordering anything. They are not too sure a 63cm bike will fit me. My friend who is 6'5" has a 69 cm bike. I do not think that bike would fit me but like I said I think your best off trying to find out exactly what size you need and then find the best fit bike.

the other thing you have to becareful of is the well this is the best we can do and we will try to make it work but it really does not work. You pay $1000 or $1250 for a bike you want to make sure it fits properly. I would rather have a bike shop say sorry but your out of luck but maybe you can get lucky someplace else vs here you go, spend alot of money, and have knee or back problems.

he got some custom job and no idea where he got it from. I do not want to even ask since it cost him around $3500.

I had a friend tell me through 1 calculator that I needed 69 cm., another one said 65, another said 64 and another said 63. As you can see why I am trying not even to look at bikes until I know for sure. I sat on a 63 cm and it seemed like it could been a good height but I wonder if 64 cm would be better. this is for a road bike.

As for a tri bike well one guy pointed out that you may not get anymore aerodynic being on the tri bike and confort of a road bike might be better in the long run.

I'm 6'4" and I've got the seat on my 61cm all the way forward (at recommendation of elite cyclist).  The forward position helps me.

You might be fine on a 61cm.  I ride a Javelin.  Make sure you get a solid set of rims underneath you.  I broke several rims on my old road bike.  My Javelin is holding up great by the way.  Love it!

My $.02 is to almost go the opposite route you are going.  Instead of deciding arbitrarily what size you need, and looking by BRAND, I'd call or go to some stores and ask the exact question you have here.

I have a budget of x, size z,  and am wanting to do tri's, what bikes do you recommend and, more importantly, what do you have for me to try out?  Try as much as you can.   A 63 cm brand x might fight differently than brand y or z.

Locally, I'd call Emery's, Transition Cycle in Pewaukee, and there's also a shop in Kenosha who's name escapes me.  Wheel and Sprocket as well, perhaps, but they're pretty weak on tri-choices, I think.

Guru will custom make most of their bikes at no additional cost.
They may be right at, or just above the top end of your price range, but they should be able to make one to fit you properly.

Yep, thanks, that's what I was thinking.

I didn't know Guru cycles were in his price range...that could be a great option.

A quick check on their website shows their least expensive bike at about $2,500 but Emery's is a dealer so I'll stop by their store and check it out.

Thanks for everyone's input - I'm looking for more suggestions if they are out there.
