Subject: What time can I expect?
I was just getting ready to sign up for my first tri (to motivate me to lose weight) and I saw that there is a 2 1/2 hour limit. I will most likely end up walking at least half of the sprint length run, biking as fast as my 6'5" frame will let me (I'm 280 lbs. now) and floundering in the water until someone feels sorry for me and tells me that I've swam enough. Can I really make it in 2.5 hours or should I find a tri with a more liberal time limit? Thanks in advance for your responses.

Kind of missing some key factors here...in particular, when's the race? And the way you typed it out, is it a reverse tri?  And what are the distances?

DFL>DNF>DNS

You'll never know until you try.

Remember the mantra, DNF is better than DNS

Yea, it would have made sense to include all the information. The tri is June 19th of this year. The tri will be run in the traditional order (that was just my dyslexia acting up). I have a new baby and my dog can't run with me.

Oh yea, DNF? DNS? WTF?

Go here: http://www.triathloncalculator.com/

I have yet to use it, but it might help you.

I'm pretty sure DFL>DNF>DNS is Dead F---ing Last is better than Did Not Finish is better than Did Not Start.

Let's think this through.  It's a sprint so if you can walk 4.0 mph, that will be about 50 minutes for the 5k run, if you can ride 13 mph, that would be 1 hour for the ride or thereabouts (and 280 on 6'5 will be a lot quicker than 280 on 5'6"  so that leaves about 40 minutes to swim the distance and do transitions.  For a sprint that should be enough.

And the new baby should not be an excuse but instead a reason - to get fitter; to set a good example; to focus on things that are important and eliminate or reduce those that are not.

Now sign up for it and get busy.  (BTW congrats on the new baby

jcjsc00 hit the nail right on the head.  You WILL finish and you will even surprise yourself with how well you finish.

Use the baby as a reason, not an excuse.  Get one of those jogging strollers and go to town if you can.  Motivate yourself and we will help too.

Now go sign up!!

You have a little over 5 months to train...you should be good.

Jogging strollers and burleys are your friend...look into them.

Signing up and paying for the thing is great motivation...get to it!

You can do it! You've got plenty of time to train for a sprint in June, and you will definitely make the cut off! You'll be fine, go for it!

Triathlon is 99% training and 1% racing.........start training, repeatedly benchmark yourself on each of the segments and you will know....it is okay to sign up and use that as your motivation to get ready and be prepared and know the answer to your own question. Make the investment in training and you will earn the right to toe the line.

Wow. Ya'll are as obnoxiously optimistic as I usually am . Thanks for all the support. I'll check into jogging strollers when she can hold her head up a little better.

Baby need not hold her/his up to be in a jogging stroller. Most strollers recline so baby can nap while you run. Had my baby in one when she was weeks old and she loved it... the fresh air will also help her/him sleep at night. Use baby as a reason to tri and get going... look into the training plans here at BT - I'm currently using the 20 week plan and it's great. Good luck!
