Comments:

I didn't run for myself. Instead, I paced my sister who needed a confidence boost...she's been running 10 min miles since she began running 2 years ago, and was afraid I think to push herself to go faster. So I paced her, and she did great! Especially considering how difficult the course was (the race, along with DWD, is legendary in Michigan)...I shouted words of encouragement as we charged up some steep hills. We hit a good pace in the latter portions of the race, doing low nines for miles 6,7, and 8.

She finished in 1:35.22 and was 29/46 in her age group (25-29).
What would you do differently?:

Run for myself! =) I felt great. I think I could've maintained low 8's.

Besides that...we should've started farther up. We didn't go that fast, yet, it still took us a mile to work our way through the slower runners.
Post race
Warm down:

cookies and gatorade.

Event comments:

I liked the course...demanding, yet fun. As I said the race is known throughout Michigan for its hills...of course when the city the race resides in is named "Hell", that doesn't hurt publicity! Shirts are way cool, saying, "I Ran Thru Hell!"

It was odd, though, feeling fresh at the start! So used to doing tri's!

I'm sooooooooooooooooooooooo jealous you got one of their T-shirts. Great job - I'm sure your sister appreciated it.

I looked for ya, Gary!

The t-shirt notes that this was the 25th anniversary of the race...the front side also has an "in memory of..." written in, with several sets of initials below (between 6-8). The shirt is bright red with florescent (green/yellow?) lettering. Also has several dancing white (florescent?) flames on the back.

The ranch were the race started was an interesting place...definitely a race I'd consider (and recommend) doing again. The hills were FUN!

Good job...how are the trails...are they muddy, overgrown?? Looking forward to the 11th...I am sure it will be a different course than in april (trail 1/2 marathon, rainy, low 40's)...I am sure the run through hell got your fire stoked for next years DWD...!!

I didn't see any trails, Daryll. We ran dirt roads...I might be wrong, but I think part of the DWD course is the same as the trail marathon you ran in late March.

And I wouldn't expect well groomed trails, either. I've heard horror stories about the course and race from friends who have ran it...

Yeah, I have heard the same thing (bog, marsh,etc.)...the course goes through a lot of the same park (pinckney) as the trail, what I meant by different course, is that after a summer of rain and heat I can only imagine the overgrowth (and bugs and critters) are INFINITELY worse than they were on the same trail in April...great stuff

BTW...why have the powers that be not capitalized on the whole "cold day in hell" marketing scheme...postcards, bumper stickers, t-shirts...this would be huge, wouldn't it??
