Pre-race routine:

Woke up at 4:45 and couldn't get back to sleep. Drank 2 bottles of Propel Fitness Water and a banana. Met with Mike A. and Mike M. and drove up to the race. Registration was fast. No lines. I guess we didn't need to be up there at 7:30am. The Mikes went and grabbed a coffee at Caribou. I was very well hydrated and needed to find a Port-A-Potty. The wind was definitely at least 20 mph through downtown St. Paul. I thought it was going to blow the john right over. We hung out at Caribou until about 8:14, then headed next door to the McDonald's. It wasn't open, but met Bryan (mndiver) and then eventually Bridget (freckle face). Also saw Wally, John R., Dan W. before race start.
Event warmup:

No warm-up. A few stretches...

Comments:

This was a tough course. Essentially lost a minute at the start (not chip timed) trying to get around people. Had to run on the median, to try and get to pace. I guess we should have started out a little further up in line. My 1st mile was a 9:28. I was really targeting an 8:24, but didn't want to kill myself the 1st mile making up time. 'Lost' another 30 seconds still getting around folks at miles 3-4. After about mile 4 and 5 (15 sec below pace), things spread out a little, and was able to get to target pace (8:09). I was proud of myself. Miles 6 through 13 were like clockwork (I love my Garmin). Maintained a SOLID pace between 8:08 and 8:10 min/mi. Very consistent, despite the hills. It helped to have Bridget running about 1/8 mile ahead as a motivator. Finished probably a 1/10 of a second behind her at the finish. She had a great race.
What would you do differently?:

Wasn't that committed at getting a PR. It was a bit of a slow start, but maintained a SOLID pace from miles 6-13. If there was anything I'd change...start up further in line and don't hold back as much at the start. Without the crowds, I probably could have picked up about 1:45 min at the start, which would have only gotten me to a 1:48:00 finish (not a PR anyways). With the cold and hills, I'll gladly take a 1:50:00.
Post race
Warm down:

Mike A. met me at the finish. Walked straight into the building. Had water, bread, 2 Pearson Nut bars...Talked with the Mike's and Dave.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Slight crowds at the start. Cold, hills, wind (can I think of any more excuses?) :)

SOLID run today! It's true the start was a bit frustrationg, but regardless of that I'd say you ran an excellent race. It's the middle of winter for goodness sake and you're out running 13 miles! That qualifies you as a bad . Nice work and great to meet you!

I'd forgotten that you were racing Saturday!  Looks like you had a great run.  I miss running in the cold, but not the wind!  Quit beating up yourself!  You did AWESOME!

No chip timing --- UGH.  Guess we've gotten spoiled.  Garmins do help though!

Now YOU'VE got the target on your BACK!  I'm gonna have to work to keep up with you at that pace over distance!  I'm barely holding 7:30's over 5k these days!
