Hello All,

I have just begun my training program to get back in shape. At this point I am 34, 6'3" and 230 lb. I have been putting on about 5 lb a year and have had enough. I used to be very fit from an active lifestyle that included volleyball, soccer, football, surfing, mountain biking, golf, hiking and whatever else I could. Work, women and laziness have gotten in the way of my health and I am trying to change that. I recently have been having many back problems and random muscle pulls from doing nothing. My father died young from heart problems and the path I was on surely would have put me on the same path.

I have chosen to train to be a triathlete because I need variety and exercise without a goal doesn't work for me. I have started a very light workout to get the muscles used to moving again. Early results are painful but promising. If I manage to stick with it I will make an effort to complete the Honolulu Sprint Triathlon come May.

I look forward to learning as much as possible from the forum.

Thanks,
Sean

Welcome Sean!

I had a similar wake up call in my early thirties. I also have early cardiovascular disease in my family and the sudden realization that I wasn't as fit as I thought I was. That was a part of the reason for tri training for me too.

Incidentally, my cardiac risk dropped considerably in a very short time.  After just a few months of training, my resting heart rate was 20 bpm slower, my HDL was over 100, and my LDL was under 100.

Hi Sean.

You've found a great resource.  My advice, for what it's worth:

  1. Log your training
  2. Don't overtrain!  Adhear to the 10% rule - don't increase time, distance, etc. more than 5-10% per week.
  3. Have fun

Good Luck!

Thanks DrE and Joe.

Unlike previous attempts at getting back into shape I am trying to do this in moderation. I do have a log of all my training as well, which is a nice motivation as it looks horrid with blank space.

I am very excited at the prospect of being fit and enjoying a triathlon.

Welcome Sean!!!

I had let myself get out of shape, too (kids, work, marriage, etc.) and just enjoyed being a dad.  But then I realized I was too unhealthy and I wanted to lead a healthier life, live longer for my kids, and set a good example.

I'm 36, started training for 5ks last summer and now training for sprint triathlons.  Its incredible to see my progress since then.  Keep at it, start slow (I did) and find a good program to follow (don't just do this randomly).

Welcome to BT!  Have fun!

Hello Sean!

You have the greatest back drop in the world to be training in, make the most of it! I have done that Honu Half Ironman back in 2005 and I highly recommend it!

Best wishes for your training!

Jason

The big island is a great place to train, although I imagine the traffic now can make biking a bit hazardous. I lived on the big island in the early 90's; it's a great place to be. Welcome

There are a few triathlons on the big island. Including the Honu Half IM at Hapuna with the biking on the actual IronMan course. There are a whole bunch of small events in Kona as well. I am doing my first tri on Oahu just because from a timing perspective it matches up best.

I love being on the big island and really enjoy the scenary.

Here are some shots from the shore I took a few weeks ago.
