Pre-race routine:

A bit rushed. Got there early-ish, registered, racked up. Would have liked more warm-up time. Same old story - get there earlier!
Event warmup:

Swam a few laps in the pool.
Swim
  • 09m 45s
  • 600 yards
  • 01m 37s / 100 yards
Comments:

Put out a bit too much effort because of misunderstanding about length of swim. Was told at the start by an RD that we were to pass the starting buoy 4 times, which equals three full laps, plus an initial swim across the pool, for a total distance of about 500 M. Others were under the impression that we'd do four full laps around the pool (total distance around 600 m). So when I started to climb out after passing the buoy the fourth time, one of my teammates gave me an incredulous look and said 'You're FIFTH' - we both knew there was no way I was out of the water in fifth place, so I hopped in for another lap. Luckily, everyone else swam that distance too.
What would you do differently?:

Not much - I went hard, which was my plan, but was feeling good at the point at which the swim SHOULD have ended. A bit tired by the time I actually left the pool, and I only gained 15 seconds on the people who got pulled out after 10 minutes, so that was lame.
Transition 1
  • 01m
Comments:

T1 Went well - could have been faster getting my shoes on after I was on the bike - need to work on that.
What would you do differently?:

Shoes on faster.
Bike
  • 55m
  • 14.3 miles
  • 15.60 mile/hr
Comments:

Climb felt good - frustrated by wet roads, so I couldn't go as fast downhill as I liked. Kept wanting to push it, but held back so I wouldn't crash. Probably the smart way to go... Definitely cold - legs were cold, feet were numb, but not much to be done about that.
What would you do differently?:

Not much.
Transition 2
  • 00m 45s
Comments:

Everything went well - fast run through T2, got a little hung up getting my shoes on my wet/numb feet - more powder, maybe vaseline on the heel.
Run
  • 21m 30s
  • 3.1 miles
  • 06m 56s  min/mile
Comments:

Good run - felt fast and just right exertion level.
Post race
Warm down:

none

What limited your ability to perform faster:

cold legs?

Event comments:

The race directors did a great job, especially for a collegiate race. The course felt a bit "empty" - not too many volunteers, especially at some of the dangerous corners on the bike course. The run was pretty barren as well, but well marked. The conditions were tough, and they managed to pull off an excellent race. Lots of great sponsorship prizes and raffles. Winning my age group was fun!

Great job Bear!

They never had that when I went to school there. Or maybe they did. I wouldn't have done it anyway. Way too out of shape.

Cheers,
Mark

AG first place!!!!!  Bet that makes bearing the cold all the more worth it.  I was checking out your splits and gotta tell ya you're super fast.  Amazing fast, and you thought your trasitions were average, I wonder how fast they are when they above average!  Good job.
