Subject: rear cassette question?

Ok I don't know alot about bike setups ( i know i need to learn). I have an older 12 speed bike with shimano sis system ( circa 1992). on the back it has a 6 ring cassette. I have bought new rims to replace the older ones and it came with a 5 ring cassette. would this be compatable or do I need to switch cassettes?
I wanted to use the older rims for on the trainer and the new ones for road/race. or do I need to get a new 6 ring cassette to put on. nashbar has one for $20.
oh and one other question I know the chain should be replaced but how do I know which on to order they seem to come in different sizes.
I want to use my old bike for this season and maybe some of the next. Thanks for any imput as i sure can use it.

The 5-speed is most certainly a freewheel, which means that the racheting body is part of the assembly that screws onto the hub with the cogs. The 6-s[eed may be a cassette, or it may be a freewheel. I think the first SIS systems used freewheels. They may be hard to find, but I'm sure that 5- and 6-speed cassettes are still available (try harriscyclery.com).

But one thing those early SIS systems have that the current road STI systems don't is a ring on the shifter that allowed you to go into friction shifting (no "clicks"). This is how we ALL rode before the take-over of indexed shifting. With your shifter in this mode, you could freely switch between 5-, 6-, and 7-speed freewheels as long as the limit screws were adjusted on the derailleur.
