Huntersville, North Carolina
United States
SETUP INC
62F / 17C
Sunny
Total Time = 1h 27m 8s
Overall Rank = 272/332
Age Group = Novice Men
Age Group Rank = 20/28
Pre-race routine:

    Pre-race nutrition:
  • Breakfast - ceral and soymilk, cup o' coffee.
  • At site - 1/2 cliff bar and a venti StartBucks.

Wandering aimlessly through the event site and transition area. Talking to fellow BT'ers, drinking coffee and generally trying to appear calm for my first Triathlon.

Helped to have fellow novices and experienced racers from BT there to chat up while waiting.

Was supposed to be meeting up with the wife before her swim start to transition the race bag...oops
Event warmup:

1/2 lap in the pool before the start... could have used a bit more.
Swim
  • 10m 38s
  • 457 meters
  • 02m 20s / 100 meters
Comments:

Had a great swimmer ahead of me, help me move around a number of people in the pool. No major issues in the pool. Liked the way the end was done with the extra wide final lane.
What would you do differently?:

Get a bit more warm up
Transition 1
  • 03m 27s
Comments:

Did not have the best spot on the rack for my transition, had a towel perpendicular to the bike rather than parallel. Made it feel a bit crowded and cluttered in finding my stuff.
What would you do differently?:

Need to get better at transitions!

  • No socks
  • No talking, us dang Novices were chit-chatting too much!
  • Get better at clipping in to the bike pedals.

Bike
  • 43m 11s
  • 12.43 miles
  • 17.27 mile/hr
Comments:

I thought I was going to vomit for the first little ways then came around. Still slower then I wanted to be...

I did get on the drops once or twice on the downhills. Tripped a bit of back pain around the "bone spur" area.
What would you do differently?:

  • Felt like my left foot/toe was turned out - need to get that fixed...
  • Not panic about my time at the 1/2 mark and crush my legs for the second half of the bike
  • SPEED - Get that avg Speed up!
  • Have a TUMs in the transition area...?

Transition 2
  • 01m 18s
Comments:

Glad I had a BT crew there to coach me through T2 - was a bit whipped from the last hill on the bike.
What would you do differently?:

  • Drop the gears and spin more coming into the transition to get those legs moving and ready for the run.
  • Learn to dismount a moving bike...

Run
  • 28m 34s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 09m 11s  min/mile
Comments:

Legs felt a bit weak, but I expected that going into this race. I am surprised how mentally whipped I was... I really had to tunnel vision it and focus on the goal. I really wanted to be in the 8min/mile not 9min/mile mark. Had to walk for 30sec at each of the gravel road turn arounds, not sure what the heart rate was but I could tell it was HIGH.
What would you do differently?:

Be in better shape...
Post race
Warm down:

Walking around talking to BT'ers OF COURSE - is there another type of cool down. Did do a 1/4 mi jog just to free up the legs

What limited your ability to perform faster:

  • Hip flexors really felt tight off the bike.
  • Transition
  • Mental Fatigue

My goal is to - beat love2tri - hahahahahaha - NOT.
1. Survive
2. Finish first triathlon.
3. Enjoy it enough to justify buying a road bike
4. 1hr 40min give or take some time....Swim 13min, Bike 45min, Run 30min

Goal 1 - done
Goal 2 - done
Goal 3 - done before the race ;)
Goal 4 - done and beat everytime I posted.

Great job Jeff!!!  I'm glad you were in the Novice category or I'd be one more spot back in my AG.  So you better step up to AG if you're doing that well for the rest of the season.

So are we planning a road trip for any races yet?  Get a BT bus?

You had a great race and have learned the most important part about the swim for us non-fish: draft like a mofo whenever possible.

Great job and I look forward to seeing you at the next one.
