hey everyone just thought i'd share my good news that we are finally getting a dog! he's just a baby so we have some time to think about taking him on runs... but i was wondering if anyone here runs with their dog and if so what breed the dog is. our pup is a coonhound, which is a medium to large breed dog and from what i have read has very good stamina. i saw it mentioned on a list of "good dogs for jogging" list but who knows how accurate that is. it was just a random thing i found...

Coon hounds were bred into sled dogs I believe to give them the longer leg running ability.  At least, at the kennel I worked at, their dogs had some coon hound in them.  I have a german sheppard, and she is 13 now, but when she was 2-7 my whole family could run with her.  She generally only liked to run about 3 miles, which was fine with me when I was younger.  But she went for a couple 5 milers, and even a seven I believe.  She liked hiking much better, and would hike for 20 or more miles.

Congrats on getting the dog!  I love dogs, and it is very exciting to have a new one in the family.  There is just nothing like a little puppy- o' der so tute!

congrats! dogs are the best and I'm always kinda fighting the urge to get a 3rd. couple quick tips:

1) work on training the dog to "heel" all of the time while walking. My husky loves to run and hates to "heel" which makes it near impossible to train w/ him. Fortunately, that point is moot b/c our other dog is a golden who isn't into distance running.

2) talk to your vet about when the pup will be ready for light jogging and how to ease them into your training. dogs need time to grow before stressing their limbs and joints too.

3) enjoy!

Remember to ease them into it just like you eased yourself into running.  Just because they have 4 legs doesn't mean they can do 7  min miles right off the bat.

That being said, I was at a K-9 5K where the winning dog was a beagle that went sub 17!!  And that was because the owner couldn't go any faster.  And I got whipped by another dog on a 12 miler where they dropped it down to 6:30's on mile 10+ and the dog had the leash pulled straight out.

so in short, dogs are great for running, but remember they have to work up to it and they have a fur coat on.  Summer is brutal for them.

I have no idea about running with dogs but can you post pics when you get him? Especially when he's a puppy...

Yea !!! dogs are great..

I run with my lab anything under 6 miles... just because anything over that I'm I'm hauling water for the both of us.

Like the other poster mentioned easing your dog into is the key & most vets will usually say wait till the dog is around 10-12 months old for regular pavement pounding runing. I teaching the dog to run with you [heeling] is very important for you and the other people you might encounter on the way as well as other dogs. attending some obeidance traingng is the best.

The first 10 minutes are the hardest for running with my dog, regardless of how many bathroom breaks he has before we start that first 10 minutes he will need to stop 2-3 times. My dog doesnt' really go faster than a 10 min/mile so that's my pace when we run together..

Congrats on the new family member

From my experience I would only run dogs on a natural surface. I found my dogs felt it more when they ran on asphalt or concrete.

Good Advice given above.

- Don't Rush him into running until an adult.  You would not make a 4 year child run with you.....  Even if it seems OK, you could be doing alot of damage to his joints.
- Ease him into it.
- The pavement could get really hot for his pads, as he is not wearing shoes.
- Carry some water for him, and get a colasping dog bowl for the water, or store a little on the course.
- Watch him, when he starts to lag behind, he is getting tired, time to go home.
- Always talk to your vet AND check with his breed's association, they are more breed specific.
- If your dog gets tired after (x) miles then create a running loop that goes by your house at (x) miles, drop him off and continue.

Enjoy the new member of your family!

My 1.5 year old wiemeraner is the best running partner i could ask for as long as its not hot out. I put on my shoes and pick up her harness and shes ready to go. Shes been tested up to 8miles and i think she'd be good even longer because i take her off the leash and its like she was just getting warmed up.

I run with my yellow lab all the time (see if you can guess his name from my handle.)

At 105-pounds, he's a big boy, but it's solid muscle and when he wants to go he is without question the fastest lab I have ever seen. However, 5 miles is about his limit-- less if it's remotely hot out. My advice (once he is old enough to run with you) is to constantly check your dog for signals he is too hot or he has reached his limit. If his pace slows, he begins breathing excessively hard or his gait changes noticeably, give him a break and finish things up.

Congrats on the new puppy. I hope you two enjoy as many great runs together as Scooby and I have.

Dogs rule.
