Subject: Almost got run over by a horse!

I was running last evening on my favorite trail in the Wissahickon Gorge in Philadelphia. It's a mixed use trail with runners, walkers, bikers, and horses.

This woman lost control of her horse, and it came galloping up right behind me. I jumped off to the side, and it galloped on by. She couldn't stop it!!! She kept yelling at the horse, "Don't do this... don't do this..."

I saw her and the horse about a half mile later. The horse had dumped her into a mud puddle. She was covered in mud. I stopped and asked if she was ok, and she said she was ok but she felt angry.

I think instead of being angry she should get some riding lessons.

a. she didn't know how to ride or she wouldn't have been saying "dont do this".

b. she probably "trained" the horse, because none of mine would ever think of bolting when i was on them

c. she shouldn't have been riding a spooked horse on a public trail.

d. that musta got your heartrate up.

there should be one word, and only one word to stop a horse. whoa. it can occasionally be followed or proceeded with "special" language, but that language is forbidden here.

sorry buot that experience, it gets on my nerves when people endanger others, themselves, and their horses by riding outside of their limits.

Good thing there wasn't a carriage attached to it. It could have been like a western!!

A bike would never do that to its owner/rider.

I actually like having the horses on this trail. They are beautiful animals.

She obviously didn't know what she was doing.

And I thought the ambling wrong-side-of-the-trail walkers were being dangerous. Glad you're okay!

I ride on a bike/run/walk trail and there is an equestian school nearby that has a horse jump trail through the woods that actually crosses the bike trail in a few places. I am just waiting for the day a meet a horse along the way, luckily it hasn't happened yet. What is worse is at the other end of trail, there is a gun club that you can hear shoot from the trail and sometime see people shooting sporting clay. The first time I ran the trail, guns started going off and I almost dove for cover until I remembered it was there.
