Pre-race routine:

5:15 am alarm goes off. Get up, make coffee for Karen, make lunch for Karen get her off to work at 6:00. Jumped on BT chat for a bit to say hello, yes, there were people on! Fed the horses, got the kids up, let the horses out, got breakfast for the kids then got them over to my mom's at 8:30am. Drive an hour to Cornell, get my race number and changed into warmer clothes.

I met fellow BTer "boyddr" alias Derek and chatted a bit.

Nutrition:

1 bowl of oatmeal with maple syrup and brown sugar.
1 glass of water.
20 oz of gatorade on the trip to Cornell.
Event warmup:

Ran for about 10 minutes up to the track and did 3 laps to get a pace and see that the foot pod was calibrated. Right on the money on the track! Ended up doing 1.3 miles at a pace of 7:48 and AHR of 138. Felt very good.
Run

Comments:

The run felt great. I met up with fellow BTer Derek Boyd at the start line and ran with him for the first 3/4 mile. He was nursing a sore hamstring so I went ahead. At about the 1 mile mark I bet another triathlete that I stayed with until mile 10.5 and he was breathing pretty hard so I asked if he minded if I took off to catch some rabbits ahead. It was great to have someone to talk to as the mile markers seemed to go by very fast!

The wind in the first part of the race was relentless. We were holding mid 7:30's for the first 4 miles and turned directly into the wind as we went up a nice hill and split a 8:43!! After that we got back into a groove and back to the 7:40's or so. The tailwind hit us at about mile 6 or 7 and boy did that feel good!!! I wish I had worn a parachute!!

I had a lot of gas in the tank after 10.5 miles and Bob, my partner for the day, was running a bit low so I moved ahead and picked a few people I wanted to catch. My last few miles were 7:17, 7:07 and 6:33, granted they were downhill with a tailwind.

Nutrition during run:

5 Carboom Gels (1 every 15 min)
~8 oz h2o at water stops
What would you do differently?:

I could have taken it out a bit faster in hindsight but it was nice to have some left in the tank after a 1/2 mary!! I hope this is the same at the mary next month!!
Post race
Warm down:

Walked back to registration area and stretched a bit. Rolled out my legs with my "stick". Got a wonderful massage and ate lots of peanut butter on a bagel!

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Nothing really. Perhaps not doing a 50 mile ride with 3000' of climbing the day before would have resulted in a faster time.

Event comments:

Great race that I would recommend to anyone although the weather in Ithaca, NY the first week in April is very unpredictable to say the least.

Great skip there Bobby boy! Saw that 8:43 and thought WTF!!!! He must've had to stop and make poopies! LOL!

Looks like you're right on track to get that BQ! Get some rest, flush those legs and get some GOOD recovery sleep!

Proud of you big guy!

(Btw.. if they only swam and biked first, you'd have been on the podium!)
