Runner | Subject: RE: Mac or PC? hey, here's a thought.... Buy whatever YOU want. They're all just computers. They're all as likely to be stolen / broken / hacked as the rest, assuming you do what 80+% of the population does. The whole Mac vs. Windows thing is nothing but a whole lot of marketing crap. Honestly, if you want something to read emails, and track your money, ANY computer that has come out since 1998 will do that. Heck, there are cell phones that can do it. |

Extreme Veteran 474 DFW Metroplex | Subject: RE: Mac or PC? I had no idea there were so many Mac fans on this site. If it were me, I would get a Mac. Of course I have never gone out and purchased a PC on my own. I have only owned Macs since I have owned computers. The price is justifiable because of the longevity of the machine. Macs that are 10+ years old are still operating in the work force and are able to be upgraded to run competitively against machines bought today. I personally have had the same G4 for almost 10 years now and with a simple 300 dollar card I would be running at speeds available off the shelf today. Mac prices are coming down as the company increases it's market share. They still hold the patents because they did release them in the mid ninetys and the quality of the machines went down so far that customers were having problems. Mac took over and insures the quality of the machines they produce today. Unlike Windows computers, there just aren't any crappy Macs out there. That is what happens when you allow just anyone to produce a computer that will run your OS, your quality drops. Granted most of the usual suspects make good quality machines. I will also state that I have only been on the phone with tech support once in the almost 10 years with the machine I currently own. |

Runner | Subject: RE: Mac or PC? I could make most of those same claims with my Windows box. Except I've only had it for about 5 years. I have, however, upgraded the RAM, the video card, the NIC, and both disc drives, as well as added in extra hard drives. I have never called a tech support line, except for my ISP. And that was to report issues that have nothing to do with the computer itself. And this is why I think this whole debate is so much hype. Again, go with Linux, or maybe BSD. They're both free. |

Extreme Veteran 474 DFW Metroplex | Subject: RE: Mac or PC? I didn't think we were having a debate I thought he was just asking for our opinions on the machines we own. He is trying to buy a computer not download a new OS. He has to have a box to put the OS on. The card that I'm refering is an overdrive. Essentially you are replacing the processor without replacing the board. Very cool stuff. Remove heatsink, pop off the old processor and insert the new one. Close the case and restart. Takes all of 5 minutes. |

Elite 3519 San Jose, CA | Subject: RE: Mac or PC? I have had both...and both have their ups and downs. The specific game I like unfortunately is not made for Mac...so have to play it on a PC...right now, my power suply went out on my Windows machine, so booted up my old MAC laptop that I really don't use anymore just to surf and get my mail...If you have the money, I would probably go with Mac, not a fanatic, but I find them easier to use, but if there are specific programs you want to run, make sure they are mac supported. |

She found a great Mac in her price range and loves it. I'm thinking about getting a refurbished laptop for PGCG so he'll stop using mine. |

It comes with a DVD player built-in ( unlike windows XP ). There is a basic editor ( not like word though ). Microsoft Office for Mac is available, though it'll cost extra ( just as it does for Windows ). There are other options, in terms of "Free" software, which are compatible with Microsoft Office formats (Word, Excel, Powerpoint), such as: http://www.openoffice.org/ -C |

Expert 1113 Las Vegas | Subject: RE: Mac or PC? I use the Open Office software even though I have the Windows crap. I keep a copy of it installed on my usb key and use it at the office as well. You wouldn't know it, but I am a pc guy (for now) considering giving Mac a test drive though. Mostly because I do a lot of video editing, and I hear it is the way to go for that. |

Nor*Cal | Subject: RE: Mac or PC? Mac! I switched from PC's to a Mac 3 years ago and never looked back. Been using PCs since the 286 (actually the TRS-80 was my first computer), and have had more than my share of Windows. First encouter was Windows 3.0, circa 1990, both as an end-user and providing tech-support. I use a Mac as my primary desktop both at home and at work. If you have access to a Mac store, I'd recommend taking a stroll through the store. You'll get the best sense of what's available, both from a hardware and software perspective. A lot of people are surprised what software a Mac will run these days that they thought were exclusively available on Windows. Take a look at the Mac ads too. They poke a lot of fun at the PC: Better results on Mac All the 'Get a Mac' TV ads. -ak- Edited by Atak Kat 2007-04-10 1:57 PM |

If you're not the gamer type that's into the highest FPS rates and water-cooled grapics cards, or an Adobe photshop master with an SLR digi-cam, the grapics cards and CPU speeds on the current macs should suffice. Not to say that the Mac can't service those needs too, but like anything else will come at a cost premium. A lot will depend on personal preference, needs, and budget. iMac vs. mac mini vs Mac Book vs Mac Pro, etc. Lots of good choices. http://www.apple.com/hardware/ -ak- Edited by Atak Kat 2007-04-10 2:09 PM |

Member 93 Milford, De | Subject: RE: Mac or PC? If you are doing just some radom stuff and surfing the net then keep the price down and get a PC. But if you are doing any graphics, or some intense stuff then go with a MAC. Go to any large business or graphic artists and you will see that the MAC rules. |

Elite 2458 Livingston, MT | Subject: RE: Mac or PC? Some food for thought: First off, do you want a project, or do you want to take the path of least resistance? What do use at work and will you need to do anything out of the ordinary to make the two systems play nicely? Do you really want to learn a new operating system? Where do you turn up the volume? How do you set the screen resolution? Where is the networking configuration panels? Do you really want to learn a new suite of programs? Do you use Office 2k7 at work? Do you need SharePoint Designer? Infopath Designer? Visual Studio? Source Safe? TeamSite? Any type of collaboration tools that are not cross platform? BSD is the core of Mac. How well versed are you with Unix? Are you comfortable? The nice thing is that you can pretty get your hands on many of the Linux apps and compile them on your Mac which is really one of the key reasons to get a Mac. Will you ever take advantage of this? Do you use any of the advanced functionality of your current operating system? IIS? MSMQ? MTS? SharePoint? etc? Do you use any applications that haven't been ported over to the new operating system? SQL Server? Virtual PC 2007? Office 2k7? What do you use now? Buy that. I just recently bought a Dell Desktop and I bought a Lenovo (formerly IBM) laptop. Both great machines. Both will last me 3 years with upgrades (I like to play video games so I will always need performance). Scout has brought up Linux a couple of times. If you're a n00b, stay away. |

Asking a n00b to compile a wireless driver (which I had to do using Ubunto) is a bit much. |
