Subject: Mac or PC?

Ok...I'm in the market for a new computer.  I want a laptop, nothing fancy because I don't play games on it (don't have time or inclination), just surf BT (and the web), online banking, etc.

I need my Money program on there and the standard "Office" products.

I don't know much about Mac's but I know people love them.  And quite honestly, I don't trust Vista.  It's like buying a new car the year it comes out.

So...

I like this test:

Ask Mac users what they think about Macs. 99.9 out of 100 of them will tell you they love them and wouldn't consider using anything else.

Ask PC users what they think about PCs, and 99.9 out of 100 of them will tell you Vista sucks.

Generally speaking, either or...

With your need to have the standard Office products, if they have to be Word, Excel, etc., then you should probably go with Windows.  I think MS stopped producing/supporting Office for the Mac.  I could be wrong.

Of course, you COULD go Mac, and then dual boot with XP.....But honestly, why bother going through the hassle?

Actually, now Microsoft has an Office package for Mac. I use nothing but Macs, and have no issues with Excel, Word, or PowerPoint from my Mac being compatible with any PC. Also, take this into consideration. In the past five years, I have had to get rid of three PCs due to a virus, spyware, etc. I have not ever had any security issues with my Mac- EVER. I update my software once a week, and that's it. For me, the security issue is large because I have medical history for about 2000 patients on my computer. The company is great, and I have no problem with tech support. When I had problems installing a new wireless router a few weeks ago, I just called Apple, spoke with a young guy in California who didn't ask me a million silly questions, and in fifteen minutes the whole house was back online. BTW- that was the second time in three years that I have ever had to contact tech support.

They are very intuitive machines, and the operating system is very user-friendly. If you have a Mac store in your area, go dink with them for a while, ask questions. Then you can get a feel for them. Also, check out PowerMax.com. They are an authorized Apple reseller, and offer great deals on used Macs with the super customer service.

Nope...MS is still producing Office products for Mac, Aand FWIW, MacOffice runs a lot better than Office for Windows.

I am also a happy Mac user (iBook and iMac). Occasionally I run into compatibility issues with peripherals, but companies seem to be getting with the program and making things more PC and Mac compatible (even Garmin!). I've only had to call Apple support once and the guy I talked to was wonderful.

A) If you patch your Windows system, like you say you do with your Mac, you shouldn't have security issues.

B) I have never had to scrap a machine of mine due to issues with spy-/ad-ware.

C) I had read that MS was not going to produce the Office suite for Macs anymore, apparently that was wrong.

D) I don't see how having a Mac makes connecting to the Internet any easier than with a PC.  They use the same protocols, and the same hardware and standards.  Plus, issues with a router or an Internet connection have little, if anything, to do with what OS you're running.

E) Macs can also be difficult.  I switched to a Mac for a while from Windows.  The whole one button mouse confuses the crap outta ya for a while.

This is alot of the overly hyped stuff Mac users tout as to why their machines are better than others.  Honestly, it's a computer.  A Mac is just as likely to be hacked or broken by a user who has no clue as to what they're doing.  I run Windows, and have never had to reboot or restore my machine because of OS issues.  It runs quite nicely, it patches itself when it needs it, and the only time I had an issue with security was through my own fault.  If you don't think a Mac can be broken into, go talk to the Royal Canadian Mounted Police.  They have an entire section of their cybercrime dept. that specializes in Mac forensics.  Or talk to the guys at Core Security.

If you're not doing anything graphics intensive, you're probably better off with a PC.  I have both and Macs are certainly great, but they are also more expensive since Apple Inc. has opted to hang on to the the rights about as gently as a bear trap.

If your needs stop at basic home office stuff, then the bang-for-your-buck edge is probably with the PC.

Mac.  I switched jobs about seven months ago, and my new company runs office software on Macs.  I will never go back to a PC.  Macs are a bit more expensive, but in my opinion, they are worth every extra penny.

My vote is for Mac.  An intel based macbook.  You can run MacOS *and* Windows XP on it.  So you can choose what you need.  You can even run Parallels software to run both OS at the same time.

All the software I need save for CompuTrainer and Cycling Peaks has a Mac version.

Office works great and is supported on the Mac.

And Apple has supported multi-button mice for several years now.

As long as you are on this discussion, will someone please enlighten me as to approximately WHEN p.c. went from meaning ‘personal computer’ to meaning a computer that runs windows??  To my mind p.c. still means personal computer and therefore a Mac falls into the p.c. category because of it’s use as a ‘personal computer.’  Thank you.  (kinda like WHEN did ‘game winning home run’ get switched to ‘walk off home run’?)

Dan:

I run an IT shop for $$.  Our environment is mixed.  In my 5+ years with this company we've never been "down" due to virus, other form of malware, bad (Intel-based) server(s), etc...only times have been due to ISP-related issues and those times I can count on one hand and the longest time down was ~2 hrs after a cable down the road was cut by a construction crew.

Point being - if managed properly, either platform will serve you well.  Like PC's and contrary to every Apple commercial that'll have you believing otherwise, Mac's DO require security updates, and a smart person would also include anti-virus software as part of his Mac "setup."  One of the primary reasons Macs have not been hit as hard as PC's (MSFT OS-based) is because they're not as ubiquitous.  ANY platform connected to the I'net is a target...and as the presence of Macs continues to grow, so too will the number of exploits attempting to bring down same.

And, as others have noted, "dual" options exist.  Check out:

Oh I figured they were to blame.  Just didn’t know when it happened or how long it’s been going on.  Now can someone tell me about the ‘game winning home run’ becoming a ‘walk off home run’?  I think someone got too smart for their britches.

We have about 5000 Wintel machines in our network. All of our techs including myself and CIO are avoiding Vista like the plague. Three of our number have already purchased new Mac machines and I am replacing my machines at home with Macs when my tax refund comes in.

When you first look at the Mac hardware it looks like you are paying a premium for the hardware considering the cost of similarly equipped Windows based machines but that isn't the full story. First the quality of the case and components is typically superior to the average HP, Dell or Gateway computer, secondly the bundled software is stuff you will actually use. When you price decent video editing, graphics editing and sound editing software (is there anyone other there using a computer who isn't tweaking digital video and/or photos?) for the Wintel platform you will find that a big chunk of that price difference is taken care of by the software.

You will still need to stay on top of security updates for the Mac but there is less likelihood of virus and trojans on the system simply because of the way Unix (Mac is an X variant) handles permissions for running and installing software: As long as you aren't silly enough to run as root.

If you want to us MS Money you will have to either dual boot with XP or use Parallels or some similar virtual machine to run Money in. Though you could consider switching to Quicken or Liquid Ledger or GnuCash.

Good luck.

Get a mac,, cooler commercials..

I used a dell just for internet poker, until the most sites that I played on were compatible with mac's. that the only compatiblity issue I've had. While I used a PC for work running windows, I just like the mac better, easier to get customer service, even though some one could write virius for mac OS, usually most of them are geared towards machines running some sort of microsoft product, since it's easy and they will infect more users
