I'd say to save them for the weekend when you have an off day, next. And not before you do your training. Just because you'll wanna keep your wits sharp, while out there doing whatever your doing. Just my 2 cents.

not drinking to get drunk, a couple beers 2 nights a week, before bed with friends, just wondering if anyone has found that it slows them down the next day or had any noticeable affect?

I don't see it as a problem the day after you drink. Enjoy your brewskis.

I have a real stressful job and good beer with friends or by myself is a must. I limited myself to 2 drinking days reguardless of the circumstances of the week, tuesdays and saturdays which are usually my brick days and i train harder for the drink. Since i started training, i rairly drink more than 6 a week and as training continues that will probably stop altogether. So limit your days and beers.

i definitely try to limit my drinking, i have to with school etc. usually only 1 day a week, maybe 2 sometimes. Which do you think is healthier (or is that a pointless question). Drinking hard alcohol such (cocktails, hey, i can have a screw driver and still get some oj ) or beers.

I recomend a good wheat beer. perhaps a german Hefeweizen. sometimes there are even little floaties in there. It is a good source of nutrition. I have not had any bad effects of drinking and training. I should say training and drinking. I only have one or two, if I have any at all. I notice no difference in training the next morning. The few times I have had more and trained the next day, I felt horrible at the beginning, but training helped me feel better.

I don't drink much or often, but I notice a HUGE training difference when I do. The next day I'm sluggish and distances or intensities that are typically quite possible are just insurmountable. I can't really afford the calories that are in the beer I like, but I do have the occasional (maybe once or twice a week -maybe) glass of red wine, and even there I feel a difference the next day. Maybe drinking is something you have to train for

I definitely notice a difference in training. But I also think it's fine to drink some. I too, just keep it to a day or two, and expect that the next days work out will be sluggish. I've got it worked out though. I and some of my girlfriends go to this pub every Thursday night to hang out, and then I have Friday as my rest day, so it has the least impact on me.

The deeper you get into your training, the more you will probably notice the effect (my theory--no proof), but just moderate it.

Enjoy your beers, my friend--and let your body tell you if you need to cut back.

this thread reminds me of lance's 2003 victory in the tour as he did his victory lap into paris, congratulating all the other riders drinking champaign, WHILE STILL IN THE RACE! He also stated after his guaranteed victory - im going to take the guys out for a beer, i love beer. Lance Armstrong...you are my hero

Shorter workouts during the week go like this for me:

1)Warm-up
2)Workout
3)Drink water
4)Have a Guiness

For off days, skip 1-3

It seems apparent that age plays a big role in drinking and training and how one feels the next day. The younger athletes seem much less affected. Take it from someone who is about to celebrate his 50th birthday, I am certainly more sluggish the day after drinking, unless I drink very little and early in the evening. If I have one beer or a small glass or two of wine with dinner at 5 - 5:30 pm, I'm generally just fine because I have 12 hours before I am getting out of bed to work out. If I drink at 7 pm or later, the sluggish effects are compounded by a ratio equal to the lateness of the hour. For these reasons, if I must drink, I find that small amounts of alcohol the night before an off day is my best choice. Also, as a result of consistent training, I stay at a very slim weight, so I have less body mass to absorb the alcohol. I find alcohol hits me quicker now, and I would think this would be true for all of us who find we are carrying less weight as we train. Lastly, I will never be a tee-totaler. I love red wine, and visit Napa Valley when ever I can. But when none other than Dave Scott said in his training book that even he drank a bit of red wine when he found it benefited his heart, that was all I needed to know!!

In my un-enlightened work place, a glass of wine with lunch would be grounds for dismissal. Clearly one should move to Lisbon!!

A glass of wine at lunch it's almost a tradition here... to be honest wine here is a tradition..
I think if that wasn't allowed, the government would be in serious trouble with the wine producers... in fact that happened a couple of years ago when the limit to drive was reduced from 0.5g/l to 0.2g/l ... one month later it was raised again to 0.5

I haven't been able to get over the wine habits I learned working in Paris. Always a nice little glass with a good meal, and when you're pregnant your doctor tells you to be sure to drink a little red wine because it provides iron and has anti-contraction enzymes. Do that in the U.S. while visibly pregnant and see what happens!

i answered a good question for my self, the night before a 5k race i drank 4 light beers in about 4 hrs. the next morning i did my usual pre workout routine. A lage coffee with sugar, banana, granola bar and water. I got a stomach cramp within the second mile and it stayed with me until i finished. My pace slowed and HR boosted to 190 at the finish.
My second 5k NO BEER the night before, no cofee or water prior but did drink a power smoothie. Caught a light cramp and felt full at 1.5 marker. i slowed my pace and lost the cramp. sprinted the last 200 yards and felt good. NO BEER before!!! but a few after.
