Pre-race routine:

Woke up at 5:45am. Resting heart rate was 70 bpm. WOW - am I that nervous? Got up and ate a bowl of oatmeal and drank some water. I did some stretches and took a shower. Then, ate a banana and drank more water.
Event warmup:

Jogged to race site (2 blocks away) and got my packet. Jogged back home and got the family ready to go. Arrived at start and met up with friends. I had a MAJOR case of nerves and felt like I was going to vomit...why? My goal was to NOT WALK and finish in under 29 minutes.

Comments:

Recovering from bronchitis and have shingles but I felt like I could still run. I was VERY nervous and thought I was going to vomit at the start line. First mile was good but when I hit the turnaround (1.45mi @ 13:40) I told myself I could walk for 10seconds...BAD decision. I walked again at the 2 mile water station and again on the shell road with .5 mile to go! I need to learn how to maintain a steady pace for the entire distance. This was definitely a MENTAL LOSS and a disappointing finish.
What would you do differently?:

NOT WALK!!! I stopped four times and even though it only seems like 10-20 seconds at the time, it adds up.
Post race
Warm down:

Just walked around, drank some water and enjoyed the rest of the race activities (kid run, prizes, etc). Stretched once I got back home around an hour later.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

I think I get race anxiety (if there is such a thing). I don't run in races like I do on normal workouts. In a race, when I run too fast I mentally tell myself that walking is okay but later I regret that decision. I know if I can just keep my NORMAL pace, I can run a better race.

Event comments:

The race is well run and this year seemed more organized than last. It took a LONG time for the awards but they had a kids run and gave out good prizes while we waited. All in all, you can't beat a 5K race that goes through your own neighborhood!! :-)
