Subject: Is this too crazy?
My name is Ty and I am in training for a 100 mile bike the first of April. Yet, I also would like to do a small sprint tri at the end of the month also. The tri is 400 meter Swim, 8.5 mile bike, 5k run.

As of now I am fully in training for the 100 mile bike. Do I run the risk of over training to do the tri event? If anyone can suggust a training program where I can train for the century ride and the tri event that would help alot

Thanks, Ty

I can't tell by what you have in the logs to date how well your century ride training is going. Also, how are you approaching the ride - do you wan tot be competitive or just finish? Unless you are doing some 25 to 30 milers at least once a week training for both races may be too ambitious.. If you are doing the rides and still have energy, then you can put in some base running and swimming and probably survive the short triathlon just fine. Much is going to depend on how current you are in the swim and run.

Thanks for the reply. As far as training for the century ride as of now I am doing about 7 to 10 mile daily plus a longer ride on the weekends. This last weekend I did 35.77 mile in about 3 hours, most of it was uphill grades (the return was AMAZING). My plan is to do anywhere between 100 to 150 mile a week, that includes my long ride. This weekend I will be pounding out 40 miles which as some hills but mostly is flat & fast. My overall goal for the ride is just to finish, I would like under 7 hours.

As far as tri training last night my wife and I went to the gym and did a 400 meter swim-15min, 10 mile bike-35 min, 2 mile run/walk-20 min. This was not the most wise training time I could have had (9:30 at night) I am a little dead today, but I did ride my 7.32 miles to work this morning.

Anyways, I am new to all this stuff and need all the pointers I can get. If you have any comments, please feel free to let me know.

Thanks,
Ty

Go to the new threads link and click on "training question". There is some good basic stuff there - especially the long one - I forget who posted it. Triathlon is an individual sport. By that I mean each individual had to find their own comfortable training and racing routine but by reading others' you can get some ideas to try out until you find the mix that is right for you. I have done Tri's for almost 20 years now - sometimes twice a month if I could find them - for a few years. I prefer using a training schedule that fits me but I occasionally train with groups for short periods if I want to work on a specific problem I have. Good luck - let me know how it's going.

I love doing 100 mile bike rides. I do one almost every weekend spring through fall. Minimum training to do a decent time in a century I would say 2 rides a week. About an hour and a half through the week and a long ride on the weekend. Try to build up to 50 miles for your long weekend ride. I believe in the idea that you need to train each disapline twice a week. Do two long hard days and the rest lower key workouts. In the winter I run and swim a lot more frequently and in the spring I bike more frequently but for the bulk of the year I train 4 days a week; twice on Wednesday and Sunday, once on Tuesday and Friday. I would like to do more but, you know, work and life get in the way. Where I'm from everyone pretty much agrees March is the most important month for cycling.
