Pre-race routine:

For this being my first 5k I was really happy it was a twilight race since I am so not a morning person! I went to the race site early in the day to pick up my packet and race number. I was a great feeling to stand in the "runners" line :) Went back and changed into my running gear, drank some water and tried to eat some but my stomach was a little upset. My friend who ran the race with me picked me up at 5pm and we headed to the race!
Event warmup:

This was the kick off weekend for the Frederick Marathon on Sunday so there was a fitness expo, food & drink vendors and a band. To warm up we just walked around the fitness expo and did some stretching.

Comments:

The run start was great and not too crowded. There wasn't a definate line between runners and walkers and actually the walkers all started out running so I was in the very back of the pack. I was a little excited and started out to fast but once the crowd spread out I was able to get into my pace. We had to do 2 laps through the course. The first lap seemed to be pretty fast. We were laped by the finishers before we even finished our first lap! The second lap went good but the hills that didn't seem to be there the first time around seemed huge the second time! We finally crossed the finish line with maybe 3 people left to finish behind us. But I felt great to run the entire race and not to be last!
What would you do differently?:

Only thing I had problems with was my breathing. There were a few times on the hills where I felt like I couldn't breath. I'm sure the more running I do the better this will be. Also need to keep losing the weight to improve my run times!
Post race
Warm down:

Walked for about 5 minutes after the run and drank some water.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Definately my weight. The more weight I lose the faster I will get. But for my first race I was happy with my time.

awesome job!!!! isn't it great to be able to say "i ran the entire 5k" afterwards? no matter how slow you ran it - you RAN it!!

keep running just as you said - the more you run the faster you'll get.. and before you know it you'll run the 5k sub 40 mins!!

Congrats on your first 5K!

Races early in the morning are strange if you are not a morning person.

It isn't bad to have to walk up the hills to allow yourself to recover.

I see you have one on the schedule for next weekend...awesome!

Very cool you ran the whole race...and paced well!
