I just got off the phone with a friend, who has finished at least three ironman events. Last week he was riding and as he was crossing a bridge that was wet from rain, his bike slipped out from under him. He has 10 stitches in his hand and a pin in his finger. A temporary lapse in judgment by staying aero as he crossed the bridge probably contributed to the accident.

I know to well how he feels, because I hit an expansion joint last year and wrecked and I suffered a broken arm. I just wasn't paying attention and let myself get to close to the expansion joint and ended up doing a little freestyle move for my friends.

All this to say that sometimes we get very relaxed when we are on the bike and that is when we can get hurt. Be careful when you’re on the bike, a lapse in judgment can cause you injury and will interfere with your training schedule.

Just another wakeup call for me,
Michael

Point well taken. Even riding on some of the roads around me is treacherous. Cars don't give you any room so you have to stay in this little 6 inch wide shoulder which is tough with cars flying by you. Aero position is good unless you're in a situation where control is the most important factor. Safety first. Thanks for the tip Michael!

i agree. after my crash last week (a pedestrian walked right infront of me and my emergency braking sent me and my bike into a serious somersault into a car --- and she didn't even stop to see if i was alright!) i have been seriously deciding if training on a bike should not be done in much less car dominated atmosphere--- like a large park. here in london it is crazy. even when i cycle at 10:00 pm when the roads are much quieter it is very dangerous--- two weeks ago on a quiet one mile stretch a young fellow purposely put his car into my path, i ran into a fence and he sped off.....to me this was a hit and run....i couldn't figure it out.... but i am sure we all experience this sort of road rage.....what i have had t learn with great reservation is that the road is NOT a place to train. Not in the city nor I suspect a busy country road..... the dangers are too high.....i get stubborn because i think 'THIS IS MY TRAINING TIME' but the drivers don't give a toss about that. I am very road wary, treat my bike like a car, don't think i am invincable but that still does not matter. So i have made the decision to book my cycle training early mornings in a park when the roads are free of cars and i can move without interuption.

I get my revenge when I drive because I rarely go above 25mph in the city
so the cars get all angry with me and I laugh because its like they can't hit me now.... i am in a car. tough! and if i have a cyclist in front i give them a car width of room when i pass which can drive some drivers crazy because we have to wait for oncoming traffic to clear.

Good for you Kalle! Why do drivers have to be so rude and inconsiderate? You should be able to ride safely anywhere. I wish they would make bike lanes on the streets. I know some cities have them but not here in the Chicago area.
