Pre-race routine:

Did not sleep too well. Got up at 4:15am. Had some oatmeal and a banana. Everything was ready to go. They were late setting up the transition area. Got a good spot, got setup, ran a bit to warm up. Should have brought warmer cloths for this early.
Event warmup:

Ran a bit. Water was too cold for a warmup swim, so I swung the arms.
Swim
  • 11m 18s
  • 750 meters
  • 01m 31s / 100 meters
Comments:

My first OWS ever. Very relaxed steady pace, 1:30 is just over my tt-pace. Came out of the water in the front group of my wave.
What would you do differently?:

Push a bit harder.
Transition 1
  • 02m 47s
Comments:

When trying to get out of the wetsuit I got really dizzy and had to sit down. Might have been the cold water. Sitting down I had a very hard time getting out of the wetsuit.
What would you do differently?:

Figure out how to avoid dizziness. Practice practice pratice getting out of the suit, both standing and sitting down.
Bike
  • 55m 28s
  • 15 miles
  • 16.23 mile/hr
Comments:

Started out too fast on the first lap after the frustrating T1. My HR was upper Z4 on lap 1 but legs staid OK. Settled down in lap 2 and tried to pace a bit better pushing hard on lap 3. Z3-Z4 effort mostly.

There were some pros in the field, amazing how hard they flew past me!
What would you do differently?:

Better (emotional) control on lap 1, don't race off like a madman.
The results show that I have to significantly improve the bike part, although I was not too unhappy with the 16mph average for me it is far from competitive. Drink a bit more.
Transition 2
  • 01m 14s
Comments:

Pretty good transition.
What would you do differently?:

Bit faster into the shoes. Drink some extra on the bike before getting off.
Run
  • 26m 16s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 08m 27s  min/mile
Comments:

Pretty good run for me, legs felt ok but midsection was hurting a bit. Upper Z3-Z4 effort.
What would you do differently?:

Running still needs some more work, but has been improving steadily.
Post race
Warm down:

Drank my gatorade/protein mix. Walk around to cool down and did some light stretching

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Fitness, specially on the bike. Bad T1.

Event comments:

First year, possibly first time for the organizers.
Very nice course, the race went off pretty well, but organization was shaky. It took them over 2 hours to get the awards out and they were shaky. Post race food and drink was poor.
As I liked the course, might try them again next year and see whether the organization improved.

Amazing that some pros and top racers showed up. Astonishing to see how strong they were specially on the bike. It was a very motivating race for me. Ready to start kicking butt on the bike!!

Great job on the first OWS. That last leg really beat me up.

Great job, especially for your first OWS!

I also have dizziness after OWS and have found that wearing earplugs helps a lot.
