Overall Rank = 244/462
Age Group = M50-54
Age Group Rank = 7/11
Pre-race routine:

Arrived at park at 7:30 after breakfast of oatmeal and water
Event warmup:

Tested water briefly before swim
Swim
  • 29m 46s
  • 1500 meters
  • 01m 59s / 100 meters
Comments:

Wasn't quite able to establish a comfortable rhythm; some difficulties navigating; wasn't able to draft effectively off others
Transition 1
  • 02m 23s
Comments:

Bike fell while running to exit; lost water bottle but didn't notice until on the bike course (disastrous); also didn't get enduralytes into pocket; hard to get into shoes with wet feet; wetsuit came off more easily than during pre-race practices; HR=174 at exit
What would you do differently?:

Tape enduralytes to bike; check for water at exit
Bike
  • 1h 23m 46s
  • 40 kms
  • 28.65 km/hr
Comments:

No water, gels or enduralytes for first half of bike course, took its toll; got water at half way station, and finally started feeling human
What would you do differently?:

Water and fuel and electrolytes
Transition 2
  • 134m
Comments:

Missed rack location at first
Run
  • 53m 2s
  • 10 kms
  • 05m 18s  min/km
Comments:

Still suffering from lack of water and electrolytes/fuel during run; leaden legs for much of course; pushed it at the end; 2 hammergels during run
Post race
Warm down:

massage

What limited your ability to perform faster:

lack of attention to detail in T1 hurt the entire effort

Event comments:

Hard to imagine a better course on a better day. Results at: http://www.coolrunning.com/results/04/me/Sep11_Lobste_set1.shtml

Bummer with the lost water bottle. Good overall finish even though parts of the race didn't go your way. Did you get free lobsters at the finish line?

The lobsters weren't free, but they weren't expensive either. The massage was free, and most welcome. It was a learning experience: take the time to run through a quick checklist before heading out of transition. I won't make that mistake again.
