Pre-race routine:

Got up at 3:00, my usual worktime get up time. Ate usual oatmeal and coffee and banana. Packed and headed for c_cic's house, she was doing the driving today, all I had to do was show up! Drove 3 hrs to Walla Walla, found the lake no problem, carted bikes and bags to transition, walked down hill to the water to see how cold. It had rained a lot of the trip down but pretty much stopped by then. Set up transition and waited in line at porta potties.
Event warmup:

Walked around, swam a bit and stood and shivered. It was cold standing there and my blue hands were cause for some hilarity.
Swim
  • 34m 8s
  • 1640 yards
  • 02m 04s / 100 yards
Comments:

The water was REALLY murky and muddy at the start. I started at the back, having had major doubts as to my ability. Got into my own pace quickly and had to stop after a couple hundred yds, a woman ahead of me asked me to unzip her wetsuit to relieve some chafing. I did and then stayed on my pace for the rest of the swim. Swam wayyy to far out on 1st leg and added a lot of distance. The rest of 1st lap and 2nd lap were much better navigation and I rounded close to the buoys. My time was much better than I expected so was pretty happy.
What would you do differently?:

Stay warm at the start. I need to work on naviagtion.
Transition 1
  • 03m 54s
Comments:

Poor transition, The wetsuit that was so my friend during the swim, turned into a unwieldy rubber monster when I tried to take it off. Top and sleeves no problem but legs and ankles were terrible. Finally had to sit down and work the right side off. Socks went on slow, I wasn't as organized as I thought I was.
What would you do differently?:

practice transitions a LOT
Bike
  • 1h 23m 24s
  • 24.85 miles
  • 17.88 mile/hr
Comments:

This was a tough ride for me. Sore knees right out of the gate and uphill and headwinds all the way out to turnaround but then downhill and tail/crosswinds on the way back. I rode pretty well but it felt like it took FOREVER to get to the 1/2 way point. Speed bumps and rough road at start and finish but otherwise great surface. It was funny, everyone on the way out had thier cycling grimace on and everyone on the way back had a big grin on.
What would you do differently?:

Aside from more training I rode about as good as I could this time.
Transition 2
  • 01m 32s
Comments:

ok for me, forgot my gel for the run and paid for that later.
What would you do differently?:

more practice, get a bit more organized
Run
  • 1h 04m 9s
  • 6.21 miles
  • 10m 20s  min/mile
Comments:

I'd forgotten my gel that I usually run with so tried to replace with Gatorade from the water stop. It didn't sit in my very well so went back to water. Pretty much ran out of energy just after turnaround and had to walk some. I was glad to see the finish on this one, didn't have anything left at all when crossed the finish line.
What would you do differently?:

remember the gel!!
Post race
Warm down:

walk around and stretched some, group picture and walked some more

What limited your ability to perform faster:

lack of nutrition. I was drinking Perpetuem on the ride and that helped a lot but during the run, I needed something else.

Event comments:

The race packet included a ticket to post race bbq. It was catered and very good, just what I wanted after warming down some. The volunteers were great, standing out in the sun and wind to help us on our way. We'll go back next year definitely and bring more club members with us.

Great job Mason! Was that one of your better swim splits? You are close to a 2 min pace. Good job getting through the run despite lack of energy/nutrition.
