Does anyone know if the current in the river is a big factor in the swim? Does the swim go upstream?

I heard that we are swimming with the current, which is a relief for me.   It's not an 'out and back' course - I believe from the information on the website that we enter the river, swim down stream, and then get out to T1.

The race is getting close!!  Hopefully the Schuykill will be somewhat pleasant to swim in.

Good to know. I was getting nervous and freaking myself out.
I'm not super familiar with Philly, but the last time I rowed on the Schuykill it didn't look like a swim would be pleasant. Come to think of it, I had a close encounter with a waterfall too. Hopefully we won't be near that thing.

Last year it was upstream for the first half, turn around, then back downstream. But I'm pretty sure it's all downstream this year. And the Schuylkill's really not that bad to swim in

Yeah, I heard that the schuylkill is actually not that bad.   One of my friends said that as far as water testing goes - a body of water in motion is always going to be 'cleaner' than a still body (like a lake).  She said that the Schuylkill is one of the cleanest race sites around.  I find that hard to believe, but am hanging on to that fact so I don't start freaking myself out, too.

Have a great weekend, ladies!

Water is always cold where I live. I was assuming that the water would be too warm for wetsuits. Is this true?

I'll be doing this tri too (my first). I had e-mailed the race director a couple times and she informed me the swim was in fact with the current, which should be nice!

I think my biggest fear is water quality. Even though I've heard it's okay to swim in, I think it's more of a mental thing for me. I thought I'd post this website I came across. It basically gives a water quality "forecast" for the river on a daily (i think) basis. Also tells you what the water temp is. As of today, the temp is a nice 79 degrees...which is good for me because I'll be going without a wetsuit.

Thanks for this website!!!  Very helpful.  I forwarded it along to my friend (not on BT) for her peace of mind, too.

No wet suit for me, either.  I actually just ordered a trisuit online - a Louis Garneau.  I have had no luck finding suits to try on at local sports specialties stores....   so hopefully this one fits.

I suppose the water temp is too high for suits anyway. Good thing, I don't want to pack it. Thanks for posting the site.

Good luck with the trisuit. I gave up and got a two piece thing. Getting a fit is tough.

Yes the current was a factor last year. The swim last year was an out and back. So yes we hit the current. Watch for drifting. I hear they are changing it this year.

I wore the wetsuit last year at this race. I think it does well for river and water with currents. Remember that the wet suit does give a bit of an advantage with speed because of buoyancy.
