Subject: Am I "ready" to tri?
I am newby here and I am doing the "Aggressive Couch to 5k Program" (4 months). How do I know which race I should be eyeing for my very first Tri? I want to do a "sprint" (880m swim/21 km bike/ 5k run) but don't know how to pick my first race. How will I know if I'm ready?????

I don't remember ever feeling like I was ready for any of the tri's that I have been in, as I have wondered if I could have done anything else to prepare any better than I had. I think as you go through your training you will find that you will learn more about what you will be able to physically handle. I am assuming that you are going to start adding some swimming somewhere along the way also. You can also do some short brick workouts (bike/run) and that will also give you a good sense of where you stand.

Michael, sounds good, but .... what should I be shooting for? I understand i have to register in advance for races. Being the ridiculous Type-A person that I often tend to be, assuming I complete the 4-month work out and that I'm feeeling pretty good about my training and then I start doing the work out that leads up to the actual race... WHICH RACE IS THAT? I guess what I'm looking for is a list of races that I can pick as my goal and then work towards being ready for that. I'm not sure if this is putting the cart before the horse but I feel silly working out with no race in sight.

I like www.active.com also! Most of all of the sites that we have posted let you search by zip code and region and list races within your search criteria. If the race has a website, check it out and see if the course is one that you want to tackle.

You could do a race that has distances that you have already covered in training. The sites that the others have posted are great websites to find tri's at. Good luck, and good training.

Though you seem to have gotten plenty of input and resources, I thought I would just give one more plug. My first tri was an all women's Danskin supporting breast cancer. A really great experience for a first triathlon.

They were super supportive and the distance is perfect. I'm sure (since you are from LA) that there is one in your area.

I got together with about 7 of my girlfriends and we all trained together. We really had a blast and made a true event out of it.

Best of luck to you!

My single green star indicates that I am recyclable.

Hi m, I'm on a similar program and hope to compete this August. I'm planning on a Sprint like you are. I'm guessing (since thisll be my first tri) that I'll know I'm ready when I can 'comfortably' swim a mile. The biking and running worry me less, but I think there's plenty of time for both of us to train.

Best of luck with training and race!!

being ready for the event is something you can do easily in 4 months. I used a program that got me ready for an event in 8 weeks. The swim was 400m, the bike was 12 mi and the run was 5k. Alot of how ready you are depends on how you want to do. If you are just looking to finish - without serious performance objectives, you have plenty of time. If you are looking to place, that's a different story.

If you have a plan, just stick to the plan - you'll be ready. You're gonna do just fine.
