Total Time = 3h 05m 24s
Overall Rank = 1024/1544
Age Group = Athena
Age Group Rank = 3/17
Pre-race routine:

Up early, had some breakfast (english muffin w/peanut butter & honey & a banana).
Event warmup:

Not much warm-up due to logisitcs. Athletes were bused from transition to swim start, so all bike and running gear were at transition. Did a few minutes of swim warm-up & some stretching.
Swim
  • 30m 39s
  • 1640 yards
  • 01m 52s / 100 yards
Comments:

I've had a tendency sometimes to go out too hard at the beginning of the swim and kind of blow up. My mantra during the swim this time was "swim easy". I felt like my swim was strong, but I didn't push too hard because I didn't want to blow up. This was the first tri swim where I was aware enough of people in front of me to try to draft, and I did so for a few minutes at a couple different points. To keep balanced, I generally breathe to one side for a while, then switch to the other side. I noticed during this swim that I stayed on-course better breathing to my right. When brreathing to my left, I always moved more to the right and got off-corse then had to correct myself - adding a little bit of un-necessary time to the swim. Overall, I felt the swim went well for me.
What would you do differently?:

Try to figure out why I pull to the right when breathing on my left side & correct that. Maybe push a *little* harder on the swim.
Transition 1
  • 03m 38s
Comments:

There was a pretty long way to go from the swim exit to my bike. I walked the first bit, then jogged. Got my suit caught on my heels -- AGAIN.
What would you do differently?:

Need to practice getting the wetsuit off more quickly. Need to practice T1 in general - I haven't put too much effort into it since I'm not all that fast overall, and have felt that until I'm faster, my transition times won't matter all that much in my overall time/rank.
Bike
  • 1h 25m 15s
  • 24.85 miles
  • 17.49 mile/hr
Comments:

I felt good & strong on the bike. Like I said, I loved this course. I wasn't sure what kind of pace I would be able to keep since I knew the course was hilly. Overall, I was pretty happy with the bike leg. I almost always feel like I could have gone a little harder on the bike.
What would you do differently?:

Maybe push a little harder on the bike to gain some time, since I know my run will be SLOW!
Transition 2
  • 02m 31s
Run
  • 1h 03m 19s
  • 6.21 miles
  • 10m 12s  min/mile
Comments:

As usual, the run was my limiter. I felt strong during the run, but just wasn't able to push up my pace. I walked through almost every aid station, which cost me some time, and I probably didn't really need to.
What would you do differently?:

Don't need to stop at every aid station. DO SOME RUNNING SPEEDWORK!! I seem stuck in this 10 mm pace rut and need to break out of it!!
Post race
Warm down:

Walking around, eating some food, a bit of stretching.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Transitions could be faster, and my *#&^!*! SLOW RUN!!!

Event comments:

I thought this was a very well run and fun race. I would highly recommend it!

Great job out there!! And, yes, it is an awesome bike course...I'm glad you enjoyed it. Maybe with the swim, as you're breathing to your left and therefore on your right side, you might just be extending your right arm out to the right a bit instead of straight ahead.

Good job!!

Thanks all! I forgot to note that I took 3rd place in the Athena division. A bit of a fluke, I think... I don't think my time would have netted me any hardware in other years, but still pretty cool! I'll likely drop below Athena weight before the season's over - so I'm gonna have to get a lot older or a lot faster before I see any hardware again -- especially in big races like this one!

Jenn,

Like I was saying great race yesterday! The course was an enjoyable one. Even better you got yourself some hardware. Keep up the training and start focusing on your race two weeks from now.

Wow! Awesome job! Impressive swim, excellent bike, and you are too hard on yourself for the run, that is long race and the run is hard!  That is my hardest too, speed work does help, I joined a group that had a coach that worked on running technique getting your cadence faster was my #1 problem, and not using my arms enough.

Hardware is hardware, it is who shows up and finishes! Great job!

Congratulations on the hardware and a terrific race! The running speed will come as you continue to run. It looks like you paced yourself well and had a strong showing in all three sports.

Great work!
