Overcast
Total Time = 1h 18m 3s
Overall Rank = 115/309
Age Group = 25-29
Age Group Rank = 11/20
Pre-race routine:

Had poor night's sleep. My parents flew in and we shared a hotel room. My dad snores. End of story. Woke up early and had a cliff bar and some gatorade. Was one of the first athletes at the event. I like it that way.
Event warmup:

Stretched and that is about it.
Swim
  • 07m 42s
  • 437 yards
  • 01m 46s / 100 yards
Comments:

Wow, 3rd fastest in my race, and 29th fastest for sprint distance. NOT BAD FOR FIRST OWS...OWS OCEAN SWIM. My goal was to be in the top 10 for my age group! The current was very strong and the waves were hard to tackle. I thought I had a good place to start the swim.
What would you do differently?:

I would have liked to run further into the ocean before beginning swim. Tackle the waves better. Fight a little more for position around the bouys. Learn how to swim better WITH the waves. I really want to work on my ocean water swim for the next 6 weeks, which will really help me for my next Tri in Minnesota, where the OWS is in a calm lake!
Transition 1
  • 02m 55s
Comments:

LONG HARD RUN through deep sand to T1, at least 1/8mile. I thought it was a fast transition even with the long run to the bike! I hated how there was no passing in the state park, so I was stuck behind a slower biker, which pissed me off. That could have added 2-4 min on my bike and overall time.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing. I thought it was a great first T1!!!!
Bike
  • 37m 27s
  • 12.68 miles
  • 20.32 mile/hr
Comments:

I feel I did well during this ride. I could have pushed harder in certain areas. I did pass a lot of people. I was only passed by fast skinny bastards!!! Damn you!!!
What would you do differently?:

I would like to pass even if it is a no passing lane, but I understand rules are rules.
Transition 2
  • 01m 42s
Comments:

Poor marking for when you had to get off bike. I got off a little too soon, but still had a fast T2. I used my old shoes because I got blisters while training with my new shoes.
What would you do differently?:

Get off the bike at the last second. That can save 30sec of running on my cleats!
Run
  • 28m 21s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 09m 07s  min/mile
Comments:

Okay pace. Thought I did a good job of keeping a steady pace. With more training, I will knock of more and more time. Took water when it was offered. Not gatorade. No biggie, just didn't want to get sticky. Started off fast, slowed pace, then finished last .3 to .4 at a fast pace. STONG FINISH!!!
What would you do differently?:

Keep on training and work on endurance along with more speed.
Post race
Warm down:

Walked around and thanked by wife and parents. Stretched out and cooled down by drinking water and gatorade.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Training. Having moved across country and developing new training plans really hurt. I will be ready for the next tri in July!

Event comments:

LOVED this race. First Tri and it was put together very well. A LOT OF VOLUNTEERS really made it great.

Get job Ryan! You did great for your first one. Just knowing what's ahead for the next one will help out a lot! Not to mention having some regular time for training and not moving across the country! Congratulations.
