2 small breakthroughs today (I am new to swim training). I found I am stroking before I breathe making it harder to roll to breathe and that I was taking such big breathes, I wasn't exhaling it fast enough. Started taking normal breathes and stroking as breathe and made it much better. Went 250y straight swim with first 75y freestyle. Also did last 75y as freestyle during cooldown. First time without gasping.

Next week I am going to try TripleThreats idea and just go for a 500y straight freestyle swim. Thanks to all who have given advice and support.

That's great Cameron. How long have you been doing the swimming? (a.k.a. maybe I'll get a breakthrough soon).

I am in week 2. I am using the Total Immersion book and am doing the lesson 1 drills with swimming in between.

Congrats, Cameron! Its always nice to see the rewards of good training. Before you know it you will be saying the same thing after swimming a mile. Keep it up!

oh I forgot to mention that I too followed the ways of TI and although I could effectively make a good splash before it, I can now swim a lot quicker with a lot more power while using less energy! HOOAH!

Hey, give your self more credit than a "small" swim breakthrough, whenever I can improve my stroke or technique that is huge in my eyes because it makes swimming easier and I'm even more motivated to get back into the pool. When you do that first 500 yd. swim without stopping you will be on cloud nine. I was a sprint swimmer in high school and a 500 yd. swim without stopping was impossible for me. I can do them now and it felt great when I could. Keep up the great work and keep swimming.

Good job! It took me two months to get really comfortable, but once I did, it made everything easier. I still tend to want to gulp air, but that keeps improving also. Keep up the good work!

I just had my third swim today, using the same drills. Felt a little better than last time but I need to cut out the fins when I do the swim laps.

*waits patiently for progress*

good job Cameron, keep up the good work i am a beginner and having trouble with the swim. so i know what you have been going through. i am still having trouble with breathing. just can't seem to get it. i start out breathing ok but then it goes bad quick. i just can't get comfortable. i think i am breathing out right but i don't seem to breathe in naturally. i seems like i have trapped air and have to birp it up it is hard to explain. any sugestions have a coach but like i posted before not much help.
i will keep at it hopefully something will break soon for me.
shooting for a sprint tri in June and started swimming about 2 months ago.after a bad swimming session yesterday i told my wife i should have started learning this swimming earlier. real early maybe when i was about 6 years old

Mac, don't be discouraged, maybe there is an aspect of your stroke that is preventing you from breathing correctly and your getting frustrated. If there is someone else swimming at the pool maybe ask them to watch your stroke and they can then show you what it looks like so then you will know what you may be doing wrong.

Well, it is finally improving! My swimming that is! Just yesterday I had the breakthroughs with breathing and with that I did my 250y straight swim with only one 25y breast stroke at 150y! Taking normal breaths is almost magical :-) I was probably hyper-ventilating myself with the gasping breaths before!!!
