Subject: Question for the bigger guys
I'm seriously thinking of doing my first sprint tri this weekend. I have been running and biking for several years and the swimming is coming along as well. There is no place to buy a tri top at this late stage but I really really want to wear something for the swim. I admit to being self conscious and I know it is probably silly but I really want to be wearing something. I searched the forums for someone who faced a similar situation but didn't find anything. If you are self conscious and don't own a tri top, what do you swim in? Im not horribly overweight but I am pretty flabby from losing a great deal of weight. Can you swim in a bike jersey? Any ideas appreciated. Event is saturday 6/30.

Have you checked at your LBS for a tri top? How about Craigslist.com for one for sale in your hometown area? Sometimes even a local sporting goods store will have one.

Just ideas..........

Believe me, we ladies have flab issues too and anyway we HAVE to wear tops in tri.

I've seen a lot of dudes (and dudettes) do this ... if you have a Target or large sports store near you, you could try getting the biggest compression top they have (looks like a sports bra but goes all the way down to waist or even hips).  Looks (and basically is) like a really tight tank top.  As long as it's made of wicking material (CoolMax, Dri Fit, goes by a lot of names ... but make sure it's not a wicking/cotton blend!) it should be just fine for the swim and the rest of the tri.

Super good luck!!!

Coodog,

I'm about 40 pounds (at least) over weight and just finished my first tri.  There will be lots of buff dudes out there (you'll be one of them soon enough!), but lots of guys like us.

I say save your money.  Maybe we won't have the best post-swim pictures, but this is your first triathlon!  It's your day; you don't have to have any worries other than finishing.

 Just my two cents.

I wore a UA compression tank for my first tri and it woked just fine. As long as you don't have anything that you need pockets for it should work for you.

For swimming I wear one of these:

 http://www.rei.com/product/670078

It provides a certain amount of warmth & flotation, and is somewhat easier to get out of than a wetsuit.

I switch to a wicking T for the bike & run.

Tri-tops can be expensive and sometimes severely UNDERSIZED!  I bought a few nice wicking tops at Target, their C9 collection for about $12.99 each and they are sized properly, maybe even a little big.  They dry pretty quick on the bike.

Good luck on Sat.  If I am not wearing a tri suit, I like to wear an Under Armour shirt with short sleeves instead of the sleeveless.  you can stick a gel pack or two in the sleeve without chafing anything.

As to your bike jersey question- Yes you can wear it, but the rear pockets may create drag in the pool.    If you are worried about pool times, get something without pockets.

Honestly, you should be comfortable as possible to race, but don't worry about weight.  Once the race starts you won't think about anything but the finish line.   I say swim topless and throw on your jersey in T1.

You're doing a triathlon, the spectators can only wish they were in good enough shape to do one. You have nothing to be self conscious about!

I'm a big guy too. I've worn the Target C9 stuff and it is actually pretty good. I used to wear XXL, but my last sleveless I bought XL, still hides the spare tire, but fits a little snugger.

I've also used a Nike Dri-fit sleevless I bought at TJ Maxx.

I've got a 48" chest and a long torso, but REI had a tri top from Zoot that was an XL with a longer back. Covers up any potential butt crack!

I'd stay away from the bike jersey. My 2 cents...

Good luck this Saturday, remember, it's just you out there. When you strip all the competitors and spectators away, it's still just you. Do your best and the fact that you are out there is a great accomplishment. I started last year and a day does not go by that I don't think of one component of triathlon. After Saturday, you'll join the madness of tris. Welcome.

Congrats in advance for what is surely to be one of the best days of your life!

I wear a trisuit for races, but if I didn't I'd use a compression shirt (not my underarmour, but maybe the walmart brand $10).

Then for the bike/run I just throw on a loose and lightweight shirt for sunburn reasons (I lobsterfry).

In the end you do want to be comfortable, but remember that you have NOTHING to be ashamed of, you are doing a TRI!

Ditto on the Under Armour compression tank.  I wore one for my 1st tri this past weekend and it worked great.

Go topless and strut around like you're built like a deity ("like a chiselled Greek God")! Get involved with the swim and before you notice it you'll be out to T1 and throwing your cycling / running top on.

Well, that's what I found for my first tri anyway. worked a treat

If you're seriously that concerned / selfconcious (I'll have to dig out the really flattering pics of me) then get a compression top in a "comfy" size and go from there.

Edit: A-hah! Got it working. kinda. Anyway, that's me post-skipton tri modelling my nice tri shorts and a Nike running "vest" as I couldn't find any tri tops to fit properly.
