Overall Rank = 394/541

Age Group Rank = 30/44
Pre-race routine:

Drove up to race site. Regular breakfast, bathroom x3, and then race.
Event warmup:

Does walking around count?
Swim
  • 29h 33m
  • 1640 yards
  • 1h 48m 05s / 100 yards
Comments:

This time includes a 1/4 mile run from swim finish to transition. My water time was 27:02. I am disappointed that this wasn't faster. I had a hard time navigating after the farthest out bouy, through the straight shot to the beach. I was all over the place.
What would you do differently?:

Navigate straight.
Transition 1
  • 01m 35s
Comments:

Major calf cramps trying to get off my suit. This is a bit slow for me, not sure why.
Bike
  • 1h 42m 8s
  • 30 miles
  • 17.62 mile/hr
Comments:

This was a hard bike for me. I did manage to cut 10:00 from my bike time last year, even factoring in the 2 mile difference, but I was struggling on the 3 mile hill on the back stretch. My bike wasn't shifting right and I couldn't get it into my big gear for the longest time, then once I did manage to get it there, I was afraid to move it out of the big gear, knowing what big hills were coming up, and I grinded up most of the hills in it. It blew out my legs. I did hit 41.4mph on one of the downhills and that was fun.

I HATE that I come out of the swim relatively fast and then get passed by EVERYONE on the bike and run. It is really demoralizing and I struggled with that mean voice in my head telling me I was a POS. I was so discouraged. I know I need work on my bike, but that makes it brutal.
What would you do differently?:

Train more hills, I suppose. What I always say.
Transition 2
  • 00m 49s
Comments:

Slow T2 for me. Not sure why.
Run
  • 1h 02m 50s
  • 6.21 miles
  • 10m 07s  min/mile
Comments:

This run sucked. I did fine until mile 5.5 and then I got the worst side cramp of my life. I NEVER get side cramps, but this was really debilitating...like a knife through my side. I tried breathing it out, and walked for 10 seconds twice, but I finally just applied my mental "ice block" and talked my body out of it being there. There was nothing else to do. They also changed the course, so that when you thought you were at the finish, you actually had a small loop (400m) to do around the pond. That was mentally hard.
What would you do differently?:

Do the aquabike.
Post race
Warm down:

walked around, water, great post race meal.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

I am not fast enough at bike or run to be competitive at this distance. I can kick butt on most swims, but in an Oly, that doesn't get you much. Truth be told, enough excuses. I just don't train enough to be good at Oly's and if I want to continue to make my husband and kids my priority, it's not realistic for me to train more than I am now.

Event comments:

This is one of the best directed races I've ever done and has been for the past several years.

Hey man... Nice work today! I was out there too... and... I had trouble navigating back to shore and I had a sidestitch on the run as well (was it the pond water?)... Luckily the run is my strong event so I got through it. The bike will come... keep at it... I think its a matter of (time in the saddle). Thanks for sharing your report, Dick Dime

You were as fast getting the report out as you were out of the water!  Shifting issues can be frustrating, especially when you need that low gear.  And to come through the cramps and finish up strong even with the "Victory 400" tacked on.

Nice meeting you today too.

Good job today.  I was at the gravel pond working on swimming straight. (Just kidding)  Just remember we do this for fun.  I like you will never be competitive at long distances and don't have the time to train as I'd like (kids and wife), but you better believe I'm gonna have fun each time I train or race.  Keep smiling were too old to go to the olympics anyway...  See you next week at the gravel pond.

Melanie,

Quit beating yourself up!  You were out there fighting for it, that's what it's all about.

If you want to get better biking on the hills, pull the kids along in a trailer when you are training.Wink

If you can share with me how to enable the mental "ice block" on the run, I'll share how to keep the "Voice" from telling you you're a POS on the bike. Deal?

I hope you still enjoyed the race despite of everything. And heck, isn't all that pain worth the post-race feeding frenzy? That race has the BEST BEST BEAT post-race meal in all of Colorado!!!
