Hello! I'm thinking about moving to Colorado Springs for work (same job just a new location). Does anyone know of any cycling and triathlon groups there? Especially groups that are beginner friendly. Also, any advice on where to live so that I am close to bike routes and trails for training (on and off road)? Thanks!

I live in Woodland Park.   It's about 18 miles west of C. Springs and another 2000 feet higher.  Absolutely beautiful!  PM me if you would like and I'll help you with some ideas.

Here is my take.  I grew up in the Springs.  18 years there.  I would recommend staying on the West side.  I grew up down near the Broadmoor and there are some good roads to ride back there.   I also like it cause it's a very safe area.  Check off Cheyenne Mtn Blvd.  Also the Skyway area (off of 21st street).  Further north there is the Rockrimmon area off of Garden of the Gods road.  Very pretty and nice area.  Probably a little more reasonably priced.  Both those areas will give you some good areas to ride.  As for the bike club, sorry can't help you.  But get familair with Criterium Bike shop and my favorite on-line store (Colorado Cyclist)  their store is east of Bijou and Academy.

Thanks for the info! West side nearer the mountains makes sense, I was hoping to bike commute to work also (up north on Briargate Parkway, across from the Air Force Academy). Rockrimmon or near Garden of the Gods looks like it might work. I'll be there to visit and find a place sometime this fall - I can't wait to check out some of the trails!

I'm North of Colorado Springs and have ventured out there. I've listed some clubs
that may be of interest.

Tri Club P2 Tri Club : http://www.pikespeaktriathlonclub.com/
Cycling Colorado Springs Cycling Club : http://www.bikesprings.org/
Cycling Pikes Peak Velo : http://www.pikespeakvelo.com/
Running Pikes Peak Incline Club: http://www.inclineclub.com/home.htm
Running Pikes Peak Road Runner : www.pprrun.org
Swim Masters http://www.csstswimming.com/

The Santa Fe trail runs through the Air Force Academy, Black Forest has rolling hills for
road cycling, Cheyenne Canyon is great for Mountain Biking and also has a 3mile road climb
that'll get your heart pumping. Bike lanes are very few and don't ride your bike on
Academy Blvd, motorist don't pay attention and it's very busy !

Hope this helps some.

Hi -

We just started a new email list for triathlon women in the springs ...
http://sports.groups.yahoo.com/group/trichics/

It just started last week so there are only 10 of us on it so far, but it should grow pretty well for a while.

There's also a women's running email list:
http://sports.groups.yahoo.com/group/colospgswomensrunninggrp/

Both are free. We use the lists to ask questions, find training buddies, race teams & carpools, and so on. The TriChics group built an 8 Hours of Triathlon team on our second day, we're starting some casual BRick workouts next week & carpools to Denver to swim in open water.
We also have had fun with some of the 24 hour running races on the women's running list. Members post runs from beginners to seasoned & fast. Or seasoned & slow. I think I'm seasoned & slow.

Oh, for trails - take a peek at Palmer Park. Great trail running & mountain biking. Center of town. There are some moderate, less moderate, and very expensive houses very near the park. Convenient to feeder trail for Monument Valley Park / Santa Fe trail (flat, but long), runs N/S parallel to 25.

Thanks Helen! I will definitely join the yahoo groups when I get out there, I will be in need of some training buddies. I fit in the seasoned and slow category too! Too bad I won't be there by Labor Day, I'd love to do the 24 hours of triathlon!

Palmer Park looks nice! And close enough to bike commute up to work. I'll check out that area when I come to visit.

I'll be out to house hunt in January and then will move sometime in February!

Hello there! I am brand new to triathlons, but I have lived in the Springs for two years now. I agree with the previous poster who said the west side is the place to live. Unfortunately, my pocket book could not afford that so we bought a home on the east side. While we do have to drive further to get to the mountains, we am not far from a bike path, so I try to ride my bike into work (downtown) on occasion. It's about a ten mile trip each way. At any rate, here is a website that you can look up where the bike paths are located throughout the city.

Good luck with your relocation!
