Muskegon, Michigan

Sunny
Total Time = 3h 31m 28s
Overall Rank = 18/32
Age Group = 40-44
Age Group Rank = 3/4
Pre-race routine:

Whole wheat pesto pasta the night before, as usual. Up at 4, pint of water, Go-Lean cereal, yogurt, apple, banana, coffee, multivitamin, glutamine, flax oil. Double-checked gear laid out from night before. Powerbar on the drive along with a bottle of gatorade. Arrived at 6:00 when transition opened, got an end spot on the rack. Relaxed and casual prep time due to early arrival.
Event warmup:

Light jogging back and forth to transition area, stretching.
Swim
  • 26m 36s
  • 1640 yards
  • 01m 37s / 100 yards
Comments:

Not many people, so not many drafting opportunities.
What would you do differently?:

Swim harder. This was my first Oly, so I was conservative.
Transition 1
  • 03m 32s
Comments:

Faster than Seahorse, even with the added wetsuit. Had trouble getting suit off over the chip. Had to put GU pack into shirt due to one falling out pre-race. I'm still putting on socks and running shoes in T1 due to foot injury, so that slows me down some.
What would you do differently?:

Practice live.
Bike
  • 1h 58m 40s
  • 35 miles
  • 17.70 mile/hr
Comments:

Missed just over a week of training on the bike leading up to the race due to an awesome trip to Washington. The legs just didn't have it today. Felt great during the first half, but got gassed in the second. Big bottle of Accelerade on the ride.
What would you do differently?:

Try not to miss training. Bring another bottle of water.
Transition 2
  • 01m 1s
Comments:

Helmet & sunglasses off, hat on.

NO FREAKING WATER IN TRANSITION AREA!
What would you do differently?:

Drink water.
Run
  • 1h 01m 41s
  • 7.1 miles
  • 08m 41s  min/mile
Comments:

Really stiff, but loosened up quickly. Stopped to pee in the woods during third mile. Felt pretty weak going into mile 4, but the GU really helped. Picked up pace at mile 4, 7:00 last mile!
What would you do differently?:

Perhaps I could have pushed a little harder?
Post race
Warm down:

Lots of walking around. Light stretching. Powerbar, chocolate milk, Accelerade, water, apple, hot dog.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Conservative strategy due to first time at this distance. Missed some bike training.

Event comments:

No results on site, no water, gatorade or trash can in the transition area. The course was well marked and staffed by volunteers and the Sheriff's Dept.

Great job for your first Oly. That swim was really fast, and the bike was still strong even with the missed riding opportunities over the past week (glad you had a great trip). Keep up the good work and enjoy the rest of your season .
