Hiya!
I have just started training for my first triathlon. I was throwing the idea around before Christmas but have decided that it is something that I am going to do. However, I think i am going to head for a sprint Triathlon to start off with. The race would be either June 12, or July 24. I have not had time to update my training log but will soon.

My main question, is what has everyone heard on Protein intake?? I have heard that enduracne athletes should consume a high amount of protein. Whey Protein??
I am a college student and am trying to save money and to buy meat all the time is pretty expensive and so i wanted to go the way of Whey Protein (the powder mix from GNC). This way i can save money and insure the fact that I am consuming enough protein. I am exercising twice a day MWF and once a day T/TH/Sat. (with minor flexibility due to class work etc) I am also lifting legs t/th/sat. and upper body MWF.

Okay, well that is it for now, i am sure i will have more questions later.
Thanks for whoever has an input.
Good luck to all!!
Kate

You don't need to go overboard with the protein. You need more than in a normal diet but not a lot more. The important thing is to get protein often. You are only as good as your last meal when it comes to protein. Whey is supposed to be really diguestable but so are eggs and they are cheap. You need to soft boil them. If you fry eggs they go through a molecular change and they aren't as diguestable. This is why Rocky drank raw eggs. I wouldn't go that far though, soft boiled is fine with me. You can also get complete proteins from vegitarian sources if you combine the right foods. Beans and rice combine to make complete protein and they make for a clean burning low fat energy rich meal. Pasta and cheese, peanut butter and bread are other combinations that make complete protein. Tuna is cheap and really good and easy. You just open the can and it is ready. Salmon is a little better for you but costs more.
Personally I am against anything that comes in powder form but I'm from the old school of training and there is a lot more to nutrition than protein and carbs. Real food has all those little things that your body needs to function properly.

There was another thread about protein intake on this board. You can make a search for it.

As a personal trainer I don't believe in protein supplements, unless you are a weight lifter. Proteins are hard on your liver to digest and our normal diet in the US contains, on average, more proteins that are needed by most people. You can do some research on teh web on teh studies done by the American Institute for sport Medicine on protein (and other foods) intake.
If you want to increase protein intake I suggest beans, instead of meat.
